Playstation2 to VGA Monitor

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Playstation2 to VGA Monitor

Post by Ness »

Hey, I want to connect the PS2 to a 15" VGA monitor I have (Westinghouse). I know there are tons of converters out there, but, I do NOT want that at all cause it's killing the signal, hence, lost of quality.

I looked up VGA inputs and got this:

VGA connector pinout:
Pin-------Name-Description
1---------RED Red Video (75 ohm, 0.7 V p-p)
2---------GREEN Green Video (75 ohm, 0.7 V p-p)
3---------BLUE Blue Video (75 ohm, 0.7 V p-p)
4---------ID2 Monitor ID Bit 2
5---------GND Ground
6---------RGND Red Ground
7---------GGND Green Ground
8---------BGND Blue Ground
9---------KEY - Key (No pin)
10--------SGND Sync Ground
11--------ID0 Monitor ID Bit 0
12--------ID1 or SDA Monitor ID Bit 1
13--------HSYNC or CSYNC Horizontal Sync (or Composite Sync)
14--------VSYNC Vertical Sync
15 --------D3 or SCL Monitor ID Bit 3

When I looked up a Playstation A/V Input, I got this:

Pin Name Description
1 GND Ground
2 RT Right Audio
3 GND Ground
4 LT Left Audio
5 Y S-Video Y
6 SYNC Composite Sync
7 C S-Video C
8 VGND Video Ground
9 B Blue
10 +5V +5 VDC
11 R Red
12 G Green

First, it seems very do-able to get what I want...I just need to know for sure if it is possible. Next, What am I connecting to what in order to get what I need done? I'm not really good in this department which is why I come to you all. Once done, I can start soldering and take pictures.

Thanks!!!

Okay, I took a stab at this, and this is what I come up with.

PS2-----VGA
11 ------ 1
12 ------ 2
09 ------ 3
X ------- 4
08 ------ 5
08 ------ 6
08 ------ 7
08 ------ 8
X ------- 9
X ------- 10
X ------- 11
X ------- 12
X ------- 13
X ------- 14
X ------- 15

I know something isn't right here mainly cause the PS2 has a slot for +5V +5VDC. Where does that get plugged into? What am I connecting wrong?

first off, the ps2 does not natively support vga. the linux kit cable was a straight-thru cable that supported sync-on-green monitors. that is basically the schematic you came up with. it is not likely that your westy supports sync-on-green (i think it was really just certain crts) but i could be wrong.

you will probably need a sync-stripper which converts it to a h/v sync. you can get all this info at http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/psxav.htm

you will need to set your ps2 to output rgb. since most monitors won't support 15khz, you won't see anything until progressive scan is enabled, and most games dont support that.

i have seen some info on getting RGBHV straight off the motherboard, which would be a better solution i would think, but the info is limited:

I saw that site before...not really enough information or at least info that's easy to understand what to do. I might just purchase a smaller monitor (7"widescreen) and just do a composite or s-video on that.

Probably would be best to save the 15" for an xbox360 mod later. thanks!
