Project Hookshot.

Take a guess on what this is.

I'm a giant fan of Legend of Zelda, and I always think of neet inventions to make from games. This is probably the hardest, one yet.

I want to make a Hookshot. Preferably the one from Twilight Princess, or similar. But I have a few questions.

How could I get the chain to come out of the hookshot? Motor?

How could I get the chain to come back into the hookshot after missing/failing a shot?

Also, what makes the chain come out of the hookshot in the game? Is there a button on the hookshot, that link presses to make it come out?

This is a hard one.

i can see a one shot design.

co2 to shoot it and a motor or spring device with a clutch to reel it back. i wouldnt expect anything great to come out of this though. its something that will never work like in the game.

thats what i was thinking. you could get like 3-4 of the CO2 cartriges that they use in airsoft guns. then you could take a cheap airsoft gun and use the mechanism it uses to open the canister.

Well..you could kinda try a magnetic action or even hydrolic/pneumatic action to launch the chain

Do you want it to pull you somewhere or just shoot a chain? If you want the first, it will never work.

You should but a REALLY good motor that can pull a person, so if, when you shoot, the hook is perfectly insert in the "Target", it will possibly get you up to it... But it will cost a lot and you will need NASA engineer fo it lol!

You could in theory have a spring in that would recoil the chain/cable. However I don't think that would make the "hookshot" light enough to fire with one hand. The idea of using CO2 or compressed air is a nice idea but it will limit the number of time it can be used vastly.

You could use a model rocket engine to propel the hook somewhere. But it would be a one shot deal.

You could use some thrusters to make it in Garry's mod.

I have seen a device about the size of a small gas can that can pull a person up the side of a ten story building in a few tens of seconds, so something with functionality at least similar to that of the hook shot could be possible.

Of course you'll be hard pressed to force a hook to "stick" to any substance at all. I image you'd need a hellish amount of force to lodge a barbed metal probe beneath the surface of any material, firing at a distance.

nah if you build it correctly you shouldnt need to worry. Ive made rockets cars and such and never had one explode on me before.
