What cable company dominates your area?

For you guys with Dish Network: how much would decent service (History Channel, Cartoon Network...) be, including enough decoder boxes to support 6 or 7 TVs?

The lowest package has those channels and a few other cool ones for about $20 to 30 a month. I've only heard of 4 TVs being hooked up, you could just get AV splitters if you want them to show the same thing. I think its $5 or 10 a month for each extra decoder. I have Dish, and its only $6 a month, but thats because we just have local channels, so they aren't mixed with static like over-the-air.

Over here, we have 1 cable company, it's NTL:Telewest/Virgin (3 companies all merged, although they know just go as Virgin, you may of heard of them), the other is BT/Sky (NOT the same company), Virgin offer TV on a NTL Line (Fibre-Optic Cable... what you americans have), and Sky offer TV on a ADSL BT Line. ADSL sucks ass, but Sky TV owns Virgin TV, now only if my ADSL Sky Internet owned Cable Internet, but it don't.

So NTL owns cable lol

(Digital Cable rocks!) (Digital Cable also sucks, I mean I would be watching attack of the Show on g4 and it would keep freezing and pixlizing, and THAT is the only channel it does it on, I really don't get it.)

used to work for time warner. thats either low signal, too much signal, or some severly damage cabling in or outside the house. call for a tech to come out.

the reason it happens if its a signal strength problem is like this. you have high and low frequency bands for stations. im guessing in your cable system, g4 is on one of the extremes (either a really low frequency or a high one). so when you have too little signal digital wont work (hence the pixels and freezing) or too much it makes too much noise on the line to be able to get a good signal (again with the same issues). reasons you have too little signal are bad splitters, too many splitters, long cables to the tv (signal only goes so far), bad connectors, corroded connectors or copper, running the cable line through your vcr/dvd recorder/tivo before it goes to your cable box, low signal out of the hard line outside, or damage cable (even a bent one can do it). too much signal can be a bad singal amp, a signal amp alone, or the signal is hot (high) right out of the hard line outside and isnt padded enough before it comes in.

maybe an outside issue or you signal strength is just barely enough at that point in time. the cable has huge issues with temp, signals are better when its cold out (the copper shrinks a lot making the distance it travels less, making for less signal loss and electricity travels better as the conductor gets colder) but also when its warm out it casues the cables to expand making the distances greater for the signal to travel along with making weak points or breaks in the copper and shielding to expand also causing even more damage to the signals or allow more noise to travel down the line.

there is a whole science to cable and signal loss/gain/noise. i spent 2 years at time warner and i can honestly say i have never learned so much outside of school (and maybe even more then school). there are guys there who know more about conduction and other physics about electricity then some physics professors. i could have spent a lifetime working there and still not know everything...

do one thing though. on your box itself hold down guide and info until the led starts to either blink or stays lit then press the select button (usually the button in the middle of the arrow buttons). on that black screen you should have a bunch of numbers but you should have some numbers that read -xx.xx or +xx.xx or just says range in red, green, or yellow. those numbers should be no greater or less then +12 or -12 or saying range.
