Its the program that you use to log on to AIM, MSN, gtalk, Yahoo, and IRC. It owns all of the separate programs, but you still need an account for whatever you want to log into.

Apparently it's called Pidgin now, because of some finstering of AOL.

Stupid AOL, I don't know why anyone used there dialup, you could get others for half the price!

Yeah, AOL is absolute crap. It trys to take over your computer. waol.exe is always running in the background taking up space in RAM and such.

Recently, my Grandpa got DSL, but wanted AOL so that he could have a familiar interface for email (He had CompuServe dial-up before) and so we installed it and it murdered the speed on his computer. Granted, his computer has a measly 128MB of RAM, but that should be sufficient for internet. So instead of monkeying around with it, I just threw an extra stick of 256MB into it (extra one I had lying around) and his problems were solved.

Stupid AOL.

EDIT: This somewhat translates over to AIM as well. AIM 6.0 uses about an average of ~60MB of RAM, while Gaim (I mean Pidgin) uses only ~15MB.

Wow, all this AOL/AIM stuff is really off topic.

RAM isn't an issue for me....i'd rather just use AIM. Those multi-protocol IM things suck anyway

You clearly have never used gaim/pidgin. Its really nice if you use multiple protocols, better than having several crappy programs opened. The interface makes sense too, imagine that...

Back (sorta) on subject, I've yet to try The Chat Software Formerly Known as GaIM. I don't have ICQ, MSN, or AIM screen names so it's pretty pointless. Google Talk works for me.

Well so far I have uninstalled everything except windows, and reinstalled the stuff i needed, you know stuff like the webcam, microsoft im, Ares, morpheus, and all my dvd conversion software, the results, well so far not so many error messages (actually none at this point except for one for something called Angen???) and I still can't use task manager but things are better so far,

Download this (download at bottom of link) and you can just open the exe, no install. Its a replacement task manager, so if something is blocking the task manager, you can find and kill the offending process with this. You can have it come up when you press alt+ctrl+del, I never use the original task manager anymore.

You know what I do? When windoze gives me those kinds of problems I back up all the stuff I want and NUKE the drive flat with a low-level format and then just load windoze back on. Of course, I prefer to dual-boot with Grub and have Linux for those days when windoze doesn't like me.

well i found out what the prob was,,,, 52 virii,,,,so I went through and nuked the virus-es and problem solved but,,,,I really neeed to watch what i download from ares
