just curious...
is anyone out there familiar with potentiometers and how to tell their strength and compatibility with others? .... namely the ones from the 360 and various joysticks.

Pots are really just like a spring with a metal tab on it that turns to correspond to a certain length of set spring,

by making the adjustment you can "dial in" a new resistance
the reason they have three tabs is because the middle one is the input and the other is the output (usually) the other tabs is just what you what it to do when it turns up or down, variation on the rule exist but just soldering one wire to the middle and another to the other side allows for the pot to become a variable resistor
yea actually joystick are two pots placed together in 2 axes
one controls the x axis and the iother controls the y axis
by setting a standard (middle value) and perversions positive or negative of that value are recorded in the respective direction and there you go a 2 axis joystick!

The way you can tell the value of a pot is by cranking it to it's highest setting and measuring the resistance.
