In late 2006 their was a re-release of the sega game gear by a couple 3rd party companies the differences are a LCD screen, much smaller, a tv out connection, and a very good battery life but can only play 20 games on a built in rom, has anyone done any work with one of these modding them to play gamegear or SMS carts?
I have to tell you that if you plan to play Game Gear games on it, if possible at all, you need to check the hardware. Reason being that an SMS can't play Game Gear games, the GG has too many more colors and I also believe that it's a faster CPU. If your lucky, that being that you can add a cartridge slot and it's based on the GG you could wire it up to play either the GG or SMS games.
If you get one feel free to post pictures or descriptions.

The unit has GG and SMS games in it, Sonic Triple Trouble was only released on the GG so it must run GG games
I'm sorely tempted to get one because I think the GG is great and especially because it has Triple Trouble, I have 10 GG units when I last checked (a few of them are bust) and over 100 carts including an action replay.
If anyone figures out how to add a GG cart slot onto the PlayPal I'd be eternally greatful.
As far as I can tell it is GG hardware so it would be able to play GG and SMS games if someone were to open it and wire a cart slot. They go for around $20 which is nice for even the backlit screen. I was just wondering if anyone did any work on one, I will have to pick one up at a local shop or ebay and check them out.
I'm buying one ASAP and taking pics of the inside :) I will definitely find a way to play GG games on this sucker ala Radica style. I hope it has some sort of RGB output though, composite is terrible :( It may very well though since the display would look AWFUL if it were composite :)
I'm going to Fry's tomorrow to see if they have them in store. If not I am ordering one online.
thanks for the link atomic man. I will definitely post some more hi res pics and detailed circuit numbers, datasheet info, and what not. To say I'm determined on modding this thing is a huge understatement, I have been planning and working on a GG uber portable for quite some time (as you can tell from my page).
I went to Fry's to buy one of these today and they said they only had one in stock according to their system. I couldn't find it on the shelves (searched for the better part of an hour) but one of the employees will be looking for me tonight. Worst case I will purchase a handful online :)
I went ahead and bought a couple of the new GG plug n plays that they have out now. Same thing but without a screen. Here is the good news though: the ROM is soldered in and looks IDENTICAL to the Radica ROM. I'm sure this can be hacked Radica style and I will definitely do so soon. I will also post pics and info. It looks like using the guts from this will be more suitable for a portable since the previous pics show either built in CPU/ROM (the glob) and a RAM circuit, or something definitely more complex. My other goal with this project is to make this sucker RGB, I cannot and never have settled for the composite trash (the Radica's main problem BTW). with the LCD in that other model I'm sure there is RGB output, that's the great news :)
I will keep on posting more info here as I uncover the mysteries of these devices. I will also be posting pics of the plug n play soon.

Ha ha! I was JUST about to tell you about this! Is the case shaped like Sonic's head and the joystick a Sonic fist? If so, I bought like 4 of those down at Fry's the other day! This thing looks great, can't wait for you to gather some information.
LOL, yup that's the one. I bought 2 of them :) Sadly it looks like they ONLY support Composite coming from the CPU which sucks major. This may be worthless to mod for me because of that (I refuse to make a portable with composite video). However, the ROM should def be hackable, I'm trying to find the GG ROM pinout online now. No luck so far but I will keep searching. Looks like the one with the screen is going to be the real deal though, since it most likely supports RGB :)

EDIT: OK I cracked open a spage GG cart and it's one ROM chip inside :) It's 32 pins but the cart pinout itself is 45. Hopefully with this I can wire the GG cart inside the plug n play and see if I can get something working:
