To tell the truth I'm geeky. But I would be labeled as one with a bit less of a computer knowledge.For example, I used to used to dual boot Ubuntu. But I had no Idea what I was doing.

I'm part of the group of "nerds" at my school. We're not total nerds, but we're not exactly "cool" (Or in my school, "Italian"). And I hate school.

I think I'm more of an AV Geek. I literally spent my whole study hall at the media center fixing the TV studio. The camera's video out port was broken, and the switchers 3rd S-video port was busted! What gives!?

People say I'm a nerd because I play amp-guard. According to the nerd stereotype, I couldn't even lift one of the daggers. I'd say I'm a geek, but not the scrawny, burns-so-bad-in-the-sun-I-look-like-lobster-man kind of geek.

Sadly, it has almost become cool to be a geek these days. It used to be more of an exclusive group.

Those that know it and can help the computer-illiterate are seen as cool, cause they are a means to an end and it's the fascination of how computers work in general. I'm often praised for knowing how to fix a relative or friend's computer, and I know that they just think it's wonderful that I can fix it not that I the person is wonderful.

Couldn't agree with you more. I know exactly where you're coming from.

To me people who know computers well are this generation's answer to the gearheads and car mechanics of previous generations. It was and is very handy that knows how to work on a car and computer geeks have turned into the same sort of indispensable resource for many people.

Thankfully, I don't get bugged too often by people to do computer stuff for them, but it happens from time to time. Most people realize I do it for a living and want nothing to do with it during my free time.

When I setup a wireless access point for a neighbor they generally act like I donated a kidney to their cousin. A little excessive perhaps, but I guess understandable when you consider that the person knows nothing about computers.

I usually help people out because I don't want them to get screwed by the Geek Squads and Firedogs of the world. Did you realize that BB charges something ridiculous like $180 to install a video card?!? It's absurd. I can't in good conscience allow this to happen.

I guess it's good to be a geek. I can help people out in my small way and at the same time stick it to the retail/service industry. Good times.

I wouldn't say that I'm a nerd or anything... I'm just a normal guy who has an interest in video games, electonics, computers. Thats not all I do though... I think that's the key. Everything in moderation is the best way to go...

Yeah, I usually help my friends/family out with stuff so they don't have to resort to Geek Squad or whatever the hell else. Many of those boneheads at Geek Squad don't know their stuff. Granted, some do, but not enough. As for firedog (what a ridiculous name), I heard that Circuit Ciry is firing a zillion people who know what they're doing, and replacing them with idiots so they don't have to pay them as much. More qualified people cost more to work for you, BECAUSE they are more qualified, and thus giving the consumers a more enjoyable experience, but nobody wants that.

So helping my friend install his new video card into his eMachines computer (I know...), thowing an extra stick of RAM in my grandpa's computer, or messing with someone's network to make it work, or whatever, just the fact that they don't have to deal with so-called "experts" makes it worth doing.

I agree about being geeky, now it's a hip cool thing (like using a computer) so it's not cool anymore. I mean, now it's cool, so it's not cool to those who were geeky... ah, eh, you get the point.

Personally I go for "ultra-hard-core" myself. Do things so far beyond geeky it's like a whole other category. Yeah!
