I finally have enough money for a laptop! Shazam!

YAY! It's a happy day, I didn't waste all money I got on Batman Begins action figures

. Well, I finally saved up approximately 2,000 dollars give or take (although a lot of it was just making garage sales). Now I could actually build an awesome portable or try to get one done...but I guess a laptop would be more of a good thing to spend this (IMHO) fortune on. But the problem is, is that I don't know what kind of laptop I should buy. This thing is basically for school work (typing, surfing the web), video work (editing, converting, transferring analog to digital

) and a game here or there (I will set the standard of 'game' as in I can reasonably play BF:2 or Half Life 2 without horrible lag). I'm pretty solid with the basics, I should get something with Core 2 Duo, and decent memory, but that's all I got. Maybe someone can recommend something on Newegg or something of that sort. Thanks.

Demon, that laptop is good. Wanna know why? I'm on it right now. Except mine has a 160 Gig HDD, and Windows Media Center, and 2 video cards. (One for gaming, and one for everything else)

But beware!

To turn the sound up or down, you have to hold function and press f7 or f8. Most laptops have a volume up and down button.

Here is a guide for you with that particular machine:

Page 1:
CPU:Bump up the Processor to a 2.0 Ghz
FREEBIES 1: Add the shirt and bag (free stuff? woot!)
FREEBIES 2: Add the game to get your gaming started
HARD DRIVE: Tuff. You want a faster hard drive or more space? Whichever RPM you choose, pick the largest one.
USB PORTABLE DRIVE: If you do not already have one, get one. Optional.
SOUND: Keep it default unless you need some awesome speakers or something
KEYBOARD and MOUSE: Your choice.Mouse is nice, but optional
GAMING GEAR: TripleFans Cooling Pad is a must. Don't want to blow anything out on your BF2 marathon!
WIRELESS NEWTORK CARD: If you need a better range, upgrade. Else, keep it default.
BATTERY: Add a second battery. You will thank me later.
CARRYING BAG: Get a backpack. Stylish yet also carries other stuff.
CAR ADAPTOR: Get the inverter. It might save your hide one day.
OS: Get Vista Business at least.

Price: For anything I said GET, as well as the 160GB Hard drive, the price comes to $1863.00. Enough left to buy a laptop from me.

Of course, if you find a better deal somewhere else, go for it. Custom jobs just tend to have more care put in them then mass-produced ones. If you want something from an actual shop, get a T60 or something. And always get the extra battery.

If I were you, I'd get a slower laptop (~800MHz, 256-512 ram) to use around the house and when away, and a sweet desktop to use when you want to game and are at home. I bet you could easily get both, and a gaming desktop would be a ton easier and cheaper to upgrade.

Get a Macbook Pro, and dual boot. Boot XP for games and boot OS X for video editing and such.

I'd agree with vskid. I have a ~140 MHZ Windows 95 OSR2 laptop with 144 mb of RAM and it works great! Gaming is decent, I can play my favorite game on it, being Super Mario War. It boots quickly and everything. The best part is, I've gotton it to work with my new flash drives, so I dont have to use those obsolete floppies when I'm transferring files! It'll be perfect when I go to college.

I've seen a reasonably priced Toshiba Satellite notebook at Best Buy and elsewhere for about $850 on sale. It has the Intel core duo processor T5200, 160 gig hd, 1 gig ram, cd/dvd reader-writer, and 15.4" widescreen. I highly recommend getting a Toshiba Satellite. I have used one for the past couple of years and they're great if you get the "nicer" ones on sale.

This is the one I was thinking of and it was on sale for $850 recently, although normally it goes for $999. Look around for something like that!

$630, it was the display but it was made in December and they are high enough so little turds can't mess it up.

Wanna know how to save 6-700 bucks? Buy the barebone HEL80 (GeForce 7600) or Asus S96J (Radeon X1600), and get the rest of the stuff seperately. Both models use Core 2 Duo's, DDR2 memory, and both take Sata laptop drives IIRC.

The typical price for a barebone S96J is $569. Compel HEL80 is about the same.

Unless you're on your way to college within the next month, I'd build a more powerful, less expensive desktop instead.

for a very portable decent power laptop i HIGHLY suggest the Fujitsu lifebook B series of laptops! 800mhz pIIIm 256mb ram 10.1" touchscreen VERY portable and lightweight (around 3lbs i think) and good battery life! i got mine on ebay as a "parts or repair" system with no hdd but everythign else and just a small crack on the hinge as the problem, cost me 180$ after shipping! you can get them for around 2-300 otherwise.

Get a MacBook Pro. Even if you want windows, it's still the best bang for the buck. If you wanna play games then download bootcamp and dual boot to XP. And don't get vista. From what I've been reading, it sucks for games. Sure some look cooler with the new version of Direct X, but how many run worse, or not at all, not worth it.
