As a teacher of mine once said, "One day you'll wake up and it will just click." You should just keep working at it. It took me about four months before the logic of how to program finally sunk in, and that's not perfect yet either. Think of program like learning a new written language, for example European ones. Get the basics down, like the logic structure, and then you can focus on the grammar/syntax.

If you want a language to learn with I was introduced using BASIC, qBASIC to be exact. But you can lean using other languages, if you want something simple and powerful I would have to suggest VB, a good number of people here know it, and it' very English based so it's not hard to understand.

Dr. KillGood wrote:All the RTS games I ever play online all the other people do is rush you as fast as they can with all the most overpowered stuff and you are trying to actually build a base so you get easily ownt and the game lasted 5 minutes no fun. This will only be a dream if nobody can help me.
I hate that too, thats why I don't play online, and I like big maps.
I too would like to see this happen, but have almost no programing knowledge either. What would be the best language to learn to make an RTS? And since I have some different wants with this, but want a similar engine, if I made the game, I would either give you the engine to use how you want, or just have different settings for what we want.

Don't you have to buy stuff to program in VB? Would C++ be a good language to make an RTS in?

Nope, Visual Studio .NET 2005 Express is free:

- .NET Framework 2.0
- Visual Basic 2005
- Visual Web Developer 2005
- Microsoft SQL Server Express
- Visual C# Express
- Visual C++ Express
- Visual J#

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/

Yay free stuff! :D (Java, PHP, and all that included.)

Depends how devoted you are to it. I'd go with VB

I'd go with Visual Basic or Visual C#, you might want to download XNA Game Studio also. Avoid programs like The Games Factory & Gamemaker though. I'd give a hand since i'm trying my hand at it, but i'm too tied up with my own learning.

@Dr. KillGood: TA Spring is similar to what you want, you might need the Total Annihilation files, you could torrent the .iso's. You can make mods for it, so you could make it what you want.

EDIT: Nevermind, having the TA files just makes it legal.

I like the idea of a strategic RTS. The trench idea's cool, but I also like the idea of 10,000 tanks on one screen. If anyone agrees with me, PM me and we can make the most actiontastic RTS ever!

I can't program anything more than console programs, unless you feel like making an RTS in Tcl/Tk  but maybe I can help with artwork :D

TA Spring is a good RTS, online sucks, cause idiots just make a few units really fast and kill you. But you can get something that lets you play just with computers, and you can have as many units as you want, given time to build them and a good enough computer. It has tons of mods, maps, and its pretty easy to make your mods and maps (compared to making a whole game).
