(Poll Please) Which has a bigger limp?

Post by Gump-in-space »

I was wondering what you guys thought of this because I was too young to experience the first event, so here it is:

Who is/was crippled the most from a terrible launch?

A) Sega Saturn, 1995
-or-
B) Sony Playstation 3, 2006

We can look at the situation and determine who really took the worst beating by looking at a few simple facts. Sony has been losing a lot of money lately from bad sales on their products, exploding batteries, the PSP, and now the PS3. They lose money if you buy their system or not. And now they trail 3rd in the world market. Some people expect them to leave the market after the PS3.
Sega in 1995 launched a good system but made all the wrong decisions. They had large success in Japan but went silent outside of their home territory. Losing money left and right they had to leave the market temporarly and lose 30% of their company. They released one more system but couldn't continue to fight only 2 years after launching.

So who is/was in a worse situation? Sony or Sega?

Sega was worse off. Sony sells a whole spectrum of electronics and even funds/makes movies. Sega on the other hand was purely a gaming company.

Sony has the $$$ to spare if they screw it up, Sega didn't really have that.

Sony sold 600,000 PS3s in Europe. No, I don't believe they bundled a TV because that makes no financial sense.

Sega was worse off because they didn't have any other ventures besides video games. Of course when the Saturn came out they were still recovering from their rash of vaporware and less-than-successful hardware (Neptune, Sega CD, 32x, Nomad...)

Sony is NOT going to die because of the PS3. Get over it.

Saturn was kind of ahead of it's time. Two processors is something that is very common today but in '95 it's like, "Two processors?! What's the other CPU to do? Do they split the work load? What?!" SMP just wasn't something that a lot of programmers had done, and only was done in some of the Saturn's later games.

The PS3, just like the 360 both have multiple cores, in other words doing SMP has become a more standard thing. So programming for the PS3 isn't going to be that much of a choir as the Saturn, 11 years ago. The only stigma that's would slow the PS3 down is that it's using a very new processor. The Cell hasn't been in the market more then 2 years, the means to program it and get the best results are going to take some time and playing with code.

And yeah everyone is right Sega was a gaming company and so had no other business to fall back on for support. However Sega wasn't run by many smart people. There were times that Sega only make hardware and couldn't afford to develop new game titles. They also messed themselves up by still making system like the SMS when the Saturn was released. They spread their money too thinly and so in a way did themselves in.
