My Opinion (Wii and 360 Related)
a lot of people (mainly Ben) think the Wii is nothing but a GC with a Controller and will not stand tall next to the 360 just because its a weaker console.
Well has anyone noticed that the PS1 was only half as powerful as the N64, yet PS1 came out on top that Generation because of the Revolutionary CD Media based games it had, and last gen, PS2 came out on top with over 100 million units sold, the PS2 wasnt even half as powerful as the Xbox, and with PSP and DS, DS is only half or less than half as powerful than the PSP, yet the DS has come out on top so far, with the PSP only staying alive because of it multimedia Functions and somewhat good, but still crappy collections of 2d games from the 16bit generation.
Since when is the Wii gonna fall? Im not saying the wii will do better than the 360, but what I think is it will be Healthy competition for the 360, and vice versa, to make it just like the 16bit gen war, the best to this day.
I mean look How many Wiis nintendo has sold in less than half a year, and compare those numbers to the 360 for over a year, and Im still trying not to make it look like the Wii is outselling the 360, but at the rate it is selling now, the Wii will have a even Install base with the 360 in about a year.
Personally I think its gonna be the Console war of 1992-95 all over again.
And no I DO NOT think Gameplay is better over Graphics, I think they are equally important.
And I know Everyone has their own Opinion, but this is my Opinion.

no im pretty sure that he said the wii was a huge gimmick and that the 360 would dominate it and whatnot. i think the wii has the most potential for very interesting games of all 3 systems. the ONLY advantages that the ps3 and 360 have over the wii are HD graphics, a larger install base(360,for now
) and more "horsepower" processor wise. dont get me wrong i like the 360 and ps3 allright, a few games i wouldnt mind having them for lol. everybody who doesnt like the wii says things like "its just a souped up GC" or "its got bad graphics" etc but that ISNT TRUE, it is graphically superior to the gamecube in almost every way, just because it doesnt support HD graphics above 480p doesnt automatically mean the graphics suck, it comes down to how much effort the coders put into their game! quick ports are gonna look like crap but games like metroid prime 3 and mario galaxy will look amazing because of the time and effor put into them and i STILL think the lack of HD is a non-issue because of all of my friends there are maybe 2 or 3 that have a tv that supports 720p or above and one person i know with a wii (i know 6 or 7) has the HD cables. untill HDtvs have an install base above 70% of the population i really dont think it matters.
as to the "gimmicky" nature of the controller i really dont get why some people think it is a gimmick, the quality of the games will go up as they get used to coding for this form of controll which means better controlls on future games, half the wii games now are crap ports from other consoles with tacked on motion controlls so of course its gonna feel gimicky at first but it has so much potential when properly used.
i could go on and on but im bored now lol but in closing some advantages and disadvantages to each system
WII:
+cheapest price
+nintendo franchises
+innovative controlls
-least powerfull of all 3 consoles (for what its worth
-high demand and limited availability
-slight game drought (should start getting better by summer)
PS3:
+most powerful of all 3 consoles
+has a couple of cool games (motorstorm basically lol)
+backed by sony and several 2nd and 3rd party developers
-MASSIVELY EXPENSIVE
-hard to program for (this generations saturn basically)
-developers leaving for other systems
-sony cant make good PR
360:
+first out of the gate, a year jumpstart on competition
+lots of 3rd party developers
+backed by M$, lots of moolah
=cheaper than ps3 but more than wii, the core package is gimped
-still not cheap (premium and elite are 400+ i think)
-early systems had lots of problems
-addons are EXPENSIVE (40$ controller, 120gb hdd will be 180$ 512mb mem card is like 50$ xbox live gold is 50$ a year etc)

I think the more accurate statement would be that the most powerful system never seems to win. Which of course would indicate that the PS3 will come up short this generation if that trend holds.Gamelver wrote:He has stated before though that the underpowered console usually seems to "win"....
I noticed somebody mentioned a negative for the 360 being the cost of the peripherals. I would contend that this is a negative for all 3 systems. You can't buy a first party controller for any of them for under $40. The Wii has the nunchuk that costs another $20. There's also the retro controller, but i don't know the cost on that one. The 360 has controllers for $40 and $50 respectively. The ridiculously overpriced hard drives and wireless adapter. The PS3 has the $50 Sixaxis sans rumble and the $50+ HDMI cable.
I remember when the Dual Shock first came out and it cost $25-30 and I thought that was ridiculous at the time. Granted it's been a number of years, but it seems as if the cost of peripherals has accelerated disproportionately to the cost of the systems. Of course this can be attributed to the fact that the manufacturers know people need the peripherals once they buy the system so they sell the system as cheap as they can so they can rake people over the coals for the peripherals.
Is it just me or does it seem like there are way too many peripherals these days in general? I know variety is the spice of life and all, but it seems like things are getting out of hand. I mean does anybody really need a $20 glove for their Wii-mote?

The retro controller for the Wii is $20 but you plug it into the wiimote ( i think ) you you still need a wiimote.
I beg to differ tho. We don't have R.O.B., powerglove, U-Force, Zapper, and the other countless peripherals that NES had. But I think the NES was an exception to console peripherals back in the day.Is it just me or does it seem like there are way too many peripherals these days in general?

I didn't want to open that can of worms, but you are right on the money.Rekarp wrote:The retro controller for the Wii is $20 but you plug it into the wiimote ( i think ) you you still need a wiimote.

The NES was probably the most peripheral mad system of all time. The NES Advantage and Power Pad come to mind as well. Although I did like the NES MAXX gamepad. Much better than the regular NES controllers.
I forgot all about the UForce! Ugh!!!

Under powered consoles are cheaper, and cheaper to develop for.
Cheap development attracts more developers and more support.
PS1 had a lot of support because it was cheap and had a higher capacity than N64. PS2 was backwards compatible and had a large advantage on the market because it was an early system, and developers wanted to move forward.
PSP is more expensive than DS to develop for, and is restrictive in comparison.. The system is too boring compared to DS now, and developers don't want anything to do with it.
Xbox 360 was an early system and developers wanted to move forward.
Wii is cheap, and attracts more developers and more support, so the market was one sided to begin with.
The xbox 360 had a large audience because of the catalogue of games it has, and was the first system in the new gen era. Since the launch of Wii and PS3, support is slowing down to accomodate for the new systems.
Wii has a very large catalogue of games already in its short life, more than the PS3 has..
I certainly think that the developers needs will fizzle out with the Wii, and the remote can be seen as rather gimmicky unless a more uniform controller is introduced with the ability of a standard controller. The Wii remote is nothing that the PS3 or 360 can't have themselves.

another advantage to the wii (forgot to add earlier) is due to the similar archetecture of the hardware to the gamecube people who were previously devving for the cube have a MUCH shorter learning curve than if they were changing to something totally new.
an interesting parallel is the ps3 compaired to the saturn, both were large and black had multiple cores/processors were expensive and hard to dev for! and if thats any indication the ps3 will sell moderatly well, have a few amazing games and a lot of mediocre ones and completly tank otherwise

Actually, they're not similar... They're copulate identical!Triton wrote:another advantage to the wii (forgot to add earlier) is due to the similar archetecture of the hardware to the gamecube people who were previously devving for the cube have a MUCH shorter learning curve than if they were changing to something totally new.

There are only additions which they have to learn, like The Wii remote, nunchucks and wifi, SD card and save system.
Besides those, the SDK is pretty much the same. The disc structure is the same, except its signed when in production.
I agree with the PS3 though.. The good games will be spectacular, but they will be far apart, and the in between will be filled with utter crap; whilst the Wii as a lot of good games, but nothing spectacular. A lot of Wii games are underrated. Take Kororinpa for example.. It's a marble rolling game that nobody has ever heard of, but it's a bloody good game.

This will probably upset some people. but remember no real games are coming for the Wii. It's getting ports of current PS2 titles and endless party games. People complain and argue about which games are 360 only, lost from the PS3, blah blah. All the while none of them are coming to the Wii. At least the Gamecube had a shot at some ports - Wii owners will not get anything resembling a 2007 era game.
Graphics aren't important? OK how about they release Spider-man 3 with all the CGI work left in post wireframe, solid color mode? By that theory that should be good enough.
The Wii is worse than the least powerful system, it's a full generation behind. Yes, the most powerful system never wins (as the PS3 won't win) but neither does the worst system. This is often forgotten because the worst systems are lost to the ages.
2600 - Only exception to this, but nothing else came out for at least 2 years, no real competition til the Inty (1979) and the Coleco (1982)
7800 - Got beat by the Master System and NES
Turbo-16 - Genesis kicked its butt, SNES peed on it.
3D0 / Jaguar - Better than 16 bit stuff, but crap compared to PS1/Saturn/N64
Saturn - A mess of a system, N64 / PS1 handed it its lunch. In theory it could have been faster than the PS1, but took a lot of work to get it there (Ps3 anyone?)
Dreamcast - A contender, but again, a little too early. When people say "the PS2 was thw weakest system last time and it won!" they always forget the Dreamcast. That funky GD-ROM was pretty weak if you ask me.
So there's history for you. Granted the Gameboy was always an unpowered POS but it's portable - it NEEDS to be underpowered to get good battery life.
Of course remember that I myself do not own any next-gen consoles yet. (except the DS but that's not a console) When I pick one, it's not going to be for a gimmicky controller (and I agree the SIXAXIS is gimmicky too), the ability to create a Fisher-Price version of myself or the option to download insanely priced NES ROMS. Nay, I'm buying the system that has the most games I want to play. And it may even be the PS3, since it's technically only $20 more than the Xbox Elite (considering I would want Wi-Fi)
