Possibly going into building a game...

Post by Unidentified Assilant »

To try out my 3D skills, I'm seriously thinking of making a fan game based on the Mortal Kombat series, because it owns, and i'm sure it's perfectly legal to create a game and release it non-profitfor others to play. What I want to achieve is a fun to play clone of Mortal Kombat, that is very similar to the earlier games in the Arcades on PSX, but in a 3D form (I find modelling in 3D easier than drawing sprites of any kind), I am currently downloading the Irrlicht Engine and would like to know any kind of programs that could help a very inexprienced programmer.

Dont be so sure, Square Enix shut down this fantabulous 3D fan made
remake of Chrono Trigger called Chrono Resurrection
It is with our deepest regret that we have to announce the closure of the Chrono Resurrection project. Square Enix Co., Ltd issued a Cease and Desist letter which means the project is publicly closed indefinitely.

Developers and companies are currently really going after fan made material these days in an attempt to protect their trademark but most of the time it just seems like companies are crusade, hell, this one fan was making a Gears of War doll for his cousin and was ordered by Epic to cease making it.

*EDIT*
Found it: http://kotaku.com/gaming/gears-of-war/m ... 243233.php
Our own Luke Plunkett brought us the pics of this awesome custom painted Marcus Fenix Munny doll created by Emilio Lopez for his cousin. Later, we get word that Emilio had received a cease and desist letter from Epic Games citing various copyright infringements

BTW that doll kicks ass...

As a 1 time poster on nintendo forums I think I have the authority to tell you to stop making that game.

cease and desist letters are generally used for intimidation, they have little weight--heck you can send your own to your heart's content. You certainly don't need to be a lawyer. It sounds like fun.
In the example of making a doll for a cousin, it would be awfully hard to prove damages. Perhaps something was worded incorrectly, or somebody's diet was short of fiber that day. a work of art inspired by another work is rarely an issue, and being non commercial pretty much eliminated any possible problems.

chrono or mk clones using proper names, images and copy are probably well over the line when distributed.

A good idea for starting a game is to think of a concept you like - then make it your own.

For example - my first game made was a like kirby - eat enemies and gain powers, you can fly, ect. Except in mine you're a demon-thingy. And you can get WAY cooler powers. My game turned out a LOT different than kirby - my friend barely believed me when I said that it was my inspiration.

God, don't remind me.

Although I've been in touch with the developers of the game over the past few years, and they did continue working on it, and it's nearly done; they just aren't going to release it to the public. It really is a shame.

They should just release a torrent of it, and then theres no way to stop it from spreading.
