maybe if it were easy to use and worked right it could be considered a virtual console replacement.
I have this odd feeling that nintendo's next handheld is going to go big into VC gaming. I like the idea as long as they provide some new 8-bit games with the old.

you're lucky, my headphone and power jack tend to quit, and whoever designed that stick needs to be executed for crimes against humanity--mine's gotten a thick layer of dust since I switched back to GBA. Really it's the lack of coding standards that bother me most. Emulation on GBA adopted standards pretty quickly.gamemasterAS wrote: Mine sitting in my pocket looks nice and shiny, an it worked out of the boxThats a bit easier.

yeah, but you can get huge microdrives, but they can be removable too. Don't get me wrong, I like SD, too, but I think compactflash should also be there.vskid wrote:"Compact Flash" isn't very compact, and you can get SD cards for less.theelk wrote:CompactFlash and good battery life are very important to me.

chips implated directly into my brain that have the processing power of a million supercomputers, they allow me to do work in my sleep and allow me to tone out the world at a moment's notice to play games that directly tap into my brain, therefore making me be the game...that is the ulimate portable, portable because it is within you!
I refuse to dignify myself with an intelligent and witty signature

EDIT: my bad ill google search
EDIT: OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! i want one
This thread has inspired me to do some research and see exactly how small I can make a computer that's capable of running a stripped down OS with just enough power to run emulators for most of the 8 bit and 16 bit systems. Mobos have gotten pretty small as of late, but it would still be a decent sized portable when it was finished. I'll let everyone know what I come up with.

Throw in some more RAM and your good, the PSP's 32MB sometimes craps out while web browsing.bicostp wrote:Hmm...
- Same size and processing power of the PSP
- Screen and versatility of the GP2X
- Uses SD cards
- Full touch screen
- Doubles as full-fledged PDA
- The main unit is just a screen, the motherboard, and generic controls. Game controls come from lock-on cradles so you don't have to map keys to different buttons.
- QWERTY kayboard cradle
- 802.11g capability, or at least ambedded ethernet
- Takes normal batteries
There you go.

The smallest motherboard I have is about the size of a 3.5" floppy drive. With a Compact Flash as the storage, and a PicoPSU, just about an 1 inch bigger than a 3.5" floppy drive is possible.myersn024 wrote:This thread has inspired me to do some research and see exactly how small I can make a computer that's capable of running a stripped down OS with just enough power to run emulators for most of the 8 bit and 16 bit systems. I was going to use this as a core for my PCp/uPC project, but the video chip or other component has severe problems with stability/heat.
For a pre-built system, a Toshiba Libretto is the price/size leader for the power level you're talking. Full speed SNES and 8 bit (not tried Genesis, but should run fine) on my 100CT which has a 166MHz Pentium MMX.

As far as my own dream handheld:
My Non-x86 (aka not PC or new Mac) dream handheld would be the Nokia N800 hardware modded with decent gaming controls, once they get software that takes advantage of the powerful Arm11 processor and 3D acceleration. Wtih 128MB of RAM, daul SD card slots, built-in Wifi, impressive processor and a decent screen, this could run some impressive stuff, not to mention being very useful. Additionally the ~$500 price tag is something that I could swing, if I just had a compelling reason too (meaning software).
For x86 (aka PC) my idea of a perfect handheld keeps bouncing between a tablet and normal laptop configuration sized down. Something like a Fujitsu Lifebook p1510d, but in a price I could afford, would be awesome. A touch screen, 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 30GB+ harddisk in a size not much bigger than my Libretto is pretty impressive. However, the $900+ price tag is a bit too impressive for my wallet.
