Hmm N64?

Me and v3ndetta have three N64's between us and we wanna know, since we both love the games on the 64 should we portablize it? I have 2 good reasons: we both love the game selections and we have three to spare incase one breaks. What are your thoughts? (I have seen a few people who didnt break a N64 in the process so we sould be right with...3. shouldnt we?)

Go for it. I only had 1 when I started, they're cheap if you need to get a new one. But they're hella hard so make sure you know what you're doing before you do it.

That's really all that matters. You don't need much actual technical knowledge to build one (though it does help

) but you DO need a steady hand, some good soldering skills, and most likely the ability to confidently and accurately solder surface-mount traces. If you don't have experience in this area, practice up on scrap boards from around the house, trash, etc. It really helps.

Also, what are your ideas for case design? The N64's boxy mobo doesn't exactly make for a very ergonomic shape, so you may want to carefully plan out what you want the case to look like and take your time, or else it'll end up looking like daguuy's.

Mkae sure you have the proper soldering eqipment and the skill to use it. A hotglue gun helps a lot ,too. If you can solder, you can do it. The connections are rather small so make sure you can do it, practice on a broken MOBO (trust me, you'll break at least 1) if you haved one (as soon as you fry your first one). I would say, Go For It

But wed rather do this, plus we have to ship a fc twin from america for 100 bucks including postage. We have three N64's to spare so were happy with that.

I gotta agree with SS. It doesn't sound like you have much experience, and though it seems cost-efficient now, things will only get worse. Make a really nice NOACp or possibly a SNESp if you want to shell out the cash for one, make it look sweet, and sell it to buy parts for a future N64p. Not only will you be better off economically going into a costly portable like the N64p, but you'll be much better prepared from working with motherboards, soldering, components, anti-static care, etc. from your previous project. But hey, at the end of the day, it's not my N64's you're frying...

I gotta not agree with SS. If you like N64 and are up for a challenge, do it. I had absolutely no experience when I started (N64 was my first). Make what you want. BTW CTF, I didn't have to solder any surface mount stuff on the N64, only the screen. And by the time I soldered the screen, I had plenty of experience working with the mobo. And my N64p is ugly because I sucked at cases back then and still do today

Yeah, but you also went through quite a few mobos, and took over a year to finish yours.

Just saying, it can be done, but going in blindly gets you not only a costly output, but one of an "experimental" nature, as can be seen from cases, sloppy soldering, etc.

i rly don't know what 2 do.
like twilightprincess said, we have three n64s between us.
but ive also found out today that my step-dad has spent half his life doing soldering and electrical stuff like that so he can always help us.
plus he has all the proper equipment that we need.

Except SS has a point.

I think we should just stick with a SNESp 4 the moment, and go onto a n64p after.

I REALLY don't want ours to be f**ked up, like daguuy's! lol jks...
