If the only reason you're building a portable is for respect, then you're making it for the wrong reason. Making them isn't too hard, I'm working on a NOACp at the moment, been slow though, I've been busy with school/being lazy, etc. As far as money goes, you can make a portable for fairly cheap if you either use cheapish parts, scrounge around, and don't break stuff ( ).
Ehm...I never mentioned respect >.<...Respect and "a sense of accomplishment" are two completely different things--you can get a sense of accomplishment from finishing school or college, but get respect from a coach or teacher.

I built my Gamecube because I had a spare Gamecube lying around, and I found a stupidly cheap screen (it sucked). So I decided to bound them together in one system, a portable... Then when I finished it, I was invited here by the locals, and I've stuck around since.. This is a good community.
I built it mostly out of boredom, accomplishment and because I could. In reality, I've only really used my handheld gamecube a handful of times, but that handful of times is certainly more than I've used a regular gamecube, so it was definitely worthwhile at the end of the day.

Do you usually have "spare" consoles just "lying around"? Do you ever purchase consoles specifically for a project?
I bought a second / third / fourth console to install and test modchips and to mod, not necessarily portables.

I've bought two Yobo NES clones on eBay for my NOAC project. And I bought my Xbox off a friend with the sole intention of modding it (Xbox games are just a nice extra).
just saying im working on an anti portable project at the moment actually 2 one being a dreamcast arcade table top and the other being a xbox standup arcade which will house my other consoles as well

There were two direct attachments for the GBA as well, one called the GBA Transverter and one called GBA TV Adapter. There are still a few of those units floating around eBay. Both Required internal installation (ala modchip)
Why I do this..hmm...that's a good question. Recently, I"ve been really confused. I saw some...err...'mediocre' portables, and then I saw at like, the Playmad..and I looked at my portable. It isn't the same, eh? I'm just trying to finish up two more. I guess it's the sense of accomplishment you feel, and the fact that it just gives you completion.
