Nope, it's just more integrated into the system if anything. Things like computers cannot run off the 120/240v AC that comes out of the wall, and needs a power supply to change it into a manageable 3.3/5/12/maybe some other volt DC. it's called an inline fuse, here are several inline fuse holders. I have a 30 amp inline blade-type fuse for the amp in my car so that if there's a short, it blows the fuse near the battery rather than either killing my battery or causing an electrical fire elsewhere in the car. The amp also has a fuse in the amp, but that's only to protect the amp itself.
