Radica Super Sonic Gold Plug 'n' Play

Looks like I'm going to make a portable Megadrive (what is this "Genesis" thing everyone keeps talking about?

) as I got a Radica Megadrive thing arriving next week.

Whilst digging around the net for pics/info I found they've made yet another version, a Super Sonic Gold Plug 'n' Play unit with only 4 games this time but they combined the controller & box-with-bits into one unit:

The design looks hastily done, like they just glued the box-with-bits onto the underside of the controller.

With the various Radica Megadrive/Genesis units on the scene now (v1 blue controller, v2 red controller, Sensible Soccer 2-player, Street Fighter II 2-player, Outrun 2019 steering wheel getup, and the Super Sonic Gold) why haven't they done one with a cart slot? That version would probably out-sell all the other ones because people would be digging out their old consoles or start buying carts on eBay for them.

Probably the same reason that Atari doesn't put a cart slot on their Flashback II; Old cartridges fail and would present a support nightmare.

Additionally, by having different game combos they have more potential get you to buy more than one. Say that you like Sonic the Hedgehog, you've likely baught either the red or blue Radica (or even both), but now comes along the Super Sonic Gold Radia, and you buy it, they've gotten you for two (or more) Radicas. If, instead, it had a cartridge slot, you'd just buy all the Sonics you like and be done with one, pending you didn't care about games you never played..
