Ok,
Building a rov for school project in electronics. Got a question. Is it possible to make a TV type video transmitter cheaply? Or is it better to buy one off ebay, I was hopeing for >500m range.
Any ideas?

For that kind of range, I think you're going to have to buy one...
I mean, I've made little FM transmitters that, with some work, I was able to stream video in horrid quality about 10 feet...
I think you're better off buying one, but hey, maybe someone else has a better suggestion, you never know!

If you just want to tune into it with a pair of rabbit ears, you might have to clear that with [song] the freakin FCC! [/song]

Seriously, >500 meters?! (1/3 of a mile, or just under 1500 feet.) You're gonna need a pretty strong amp for that to be effective. You can do it easily with a camcorder and a VCR. (Camcorder plugs into VCR's AV input, and the VCR has an antenna on the output.) It's short range but it works. You could see what those mini spy cameras they sell in the back of Popular Science go for.
Between an extra antenna, an amp, and high volume sound, I was able to make my $20 FM transmitter broadcast over 100 feet. Granted it's not video but hey it was awesome to listen to music on my Quadra on a Walkman in the back yard.

The 'spy cameras' on eBay, are crappy at best.
Sure, they are small, but the range is only ~25m, at best. I think that 1W is the best I can have without a licence in Australia, and adding a long antenna to a low power transmitter won't help, probably make it even worse.
The >500m was just an idea, for an rov I need range. Were could I buy such a thing?

Could you use WiFi and streaming video? (cantennas seem to be slightly less frowned upon than pirate TV stations, well at least here in the States.)

The chalk-cube sized wireless spy cameras have as far as I know a 50mW AV transmitter in them, but you can buy 800/1000/1500/3000mW transmitter setups, the 1000/1500mW transmitters I guess would suit your needs.
I have a 1500mW AV transmitter on my RC car along with a CCD camera on the front, it's great fun driving it in first person perspective with LCD glasses
The main thing about the transmitters is the frequency they run on, most are 1.2ghz which is illegal to use in the US and UK (but I haven't heard of anyone getting told off or had-up by the government bodies that regulate radio transmissions for using 1.2ghz), but the 2.4ghz ones are completely legal to use in the US & UK but there are restrictions on the mW output of the transmitter, also you may have to compete with wifi networks as they also use the 2.4ghz band.
Larger antennas will help on the transmitter & receiver ends but you can't use an antenna meant for 2.4ghz on a 1.2ghz setup as they work on different wavelengths, 1.2ghz antennas are generally double the size of 2.4ghz ones.

I can help with the camera part
. i would use a security camera you can get farly cheap ones but im not sure where try e bay and then buy a video sender. if you need help with any other parts of the rov i can help there also.
i have a small high quality camera that i use for thing like this thats why i would recommand a security camera.
