I figure this is pretty simple. I want something that applies voltage to LED's in such a way that they fade on and off. Picture a voltage vs. time char with sine and cosine.
As well, something that alternates LED's on and off with no fade.

Using all these fancy opamp circuits to control the brightness of leds seems pretty silly to me when I have a bunch of microcontrollers already sitting around. modulating the voltage like that is technically not as precise as using PWM anyways. And you could come up with many more complicated things than just blinking.

LEDs do not like their current and voltage shanged at all. PWM is the way to mo, this is like a motor, you don't alter the voltage / current, you send pulses to them from a PWM or the like.
One guy once made this great little mood lamp, it used 12 LEDS, 4 each of read, green and blue, and made this wonderful colour changing mood lamp. This is a great start for somone to LED PWM. I have built somthing of the like once.
Beore I go there is one thing I learnt in hgihschool electronics. Apply 12 volt, 10 - 15 amp through and led, they don't blow up. They explode, the blow into little pieces, looks cool as.
Be carefull though.
