Nah, you just need a good firmware that is easy to downgrade or upgrade to an OE firmware. I'm not sure what those are, vb does though.

mdding its EASY i do it for my homies at school so we can play gta vcs with NO UMD we got da pimpin 3.03 oe-c LOL this was the funnist post ever made

Well there is an actual mod-chip for the Psp and it is one of the hardest mod-chips ever to install.

....Which is quite ok, because you don't need a modchip. Just install custom firmware and you're good to go. If you do get a PSP and need any help, feel free to ask me, I know what I'm doing. Of course, I second the suggestion of asking vb. He knows more than me. :P Either way, it's a simple matter of following tutorials which are really not hard to understand.
