Need help starting a N64p.

Post by Mc2Elite »

Hello. I have been wanting to make a portable N64 for a while now, but just now have found the time to do so. I have two N64s that I can use, and was looking at this site http://stadsport.revhost.net/n64m.html#Supplies for a basic guide. That system seems way too large though. I do like the Gamecube screen however. I have access to someone who can solder very well, but I would like an opinion about the above guide, and how to make it smaller. Thank you guys so much.

This guide is horrible (I am trying to use words that will not get me kicked off this site). 18v is way too much. None likes 13 batteries, the play time is probably horrible. DO I have to say anymore. Use the bits of info and guides found on this fourm. They are here, just look. Use a PS1 screen, they are about $30 to $60. It is pretty straight forward on how to make one of these. Just ask a fourm member for help if you need it, they (including me) will draw a diagram, ect. if you need it. I don't like the tackle box idea either, too much hacking and not the right shape. I prefer to make custom cases, if you provide the dimensions you can probably have one made by a fourm member for a low cost too. If you need help PM (private message) me and I will help or post a question and you will get an answer. I hope this has helped :) .

Thank you, I plan to make this a project to be finished before summer. I would really enjoy some of my N64 games on the go.

At the moment I have 3 problems.

1. I can't get a hold of the special screwdriver for the N64
2. I have no idea how the wiring needs to be.
3. How would I get a custom case?

I really appreciate the help, and hope that when this is all said and done I can help people in the same way you guys are helping me.

Thanks, Gamerdude.

just either tear it open, or do what I did and drill the outside parts of the screw well until you can stick pliers into there, grab the screw head, and twist it out! you don't need a gamebit to open one.

Do you know anything about electronics? I'm assuming your friend that sodders does then. It's really simple to figure out how to do this. Example Video wire goes to Video in on screen etc.

One thing that you really need to know is that the N64 is using 2 voltages. If you use the PSone screen you need 7.5-9V and 3.3V. you can get 3.3V by getting a free DC/DC convertor of Texas Instruments.(just search the forumn)

To make a case you can buy 1/16" engraving plastic from a trophy shop. And bend 1/16" Aluminum strips from the hardware for the sides.

You really should get Bens book. I didn't make any of the portables in it but it taught me a lot on how to build the case and on anykind of portable really.

Also you should tell us what you want your dimensions to be so that your not wasting your time on building one 2"x2"x2"

Just ask questions on every single point.
Use your talents for God's Glory!

I am pretty decent with electronics, I am not an expert. I do, however do my fair share of work on them. Just nothing advanced. Though I really, really, really appreciate all the help.

Also, can I use a Gamecube portable screen in place of the PSone screen, I mean it works PnP style with the N64.

I heard that the GC screen uses 18V. I don't belive it because the GC only runs on 12 but that is just me and arn't the GC screens smaller. I have the pinouts and inputs listed for the N64 and PS1 sreen on a post here labeled N64 A/V something. As for power, Skyone and Harshboy made, it has been stickied in this fourm (N64). If you value your N64 case do the following.

Use a hard pen, remove the ink cartrige, heat it over a candle, press it on the screw hard and let it harden. Press hard while you are unscrewing it as it will srip the "pen" easily. Obviously use one of the little 10 for 47 cents pens from Wally World ( I love that name for Wal*Mart). If you don't have this patience usew a Dremel (High Speed rotary Tool) and go Phsyco  (I know, I spelled it wrong, it adds to the stupid style effect  ) on it (my method) :D .

Haha, that actually sounds fun. I will attempt the Pen attempt. Yay, you guys. I will get it open then purchase a screen, and whatever else I need... Which as I see it is a case, and I think thats all... I'm not sure, I won't be actually attempting to build it until I have all my facts about keeping my 64 alive.

Once again, thank you guys.

P.S. I can not get the Pen to harden right, the screws look almost completely round...

Are you talking about the Zenith Gamecube screens? If so, then you're very misinformed. It's the exact same as the Sony PSOne screen. Really. The exact same. I've bought three, even a Zenith PS2 screen. The exact same. Not smaller, and it runs on 7.5 - 9 volts. There's a linear regulator in the part of the case that attaches to the gamecube/ps2/xbox so it can run off of the power supply for the system and not get fried.

To keep your 64 alive:
  • Don't run it on carpet
Don't solder in one place too long
Don't run higher than nessecary power
    Don't shake or toss it
    Use ESD prevention devices
    And finally
Don't look at it wrong
I am serious on the last one

Thats great to hear, I just got the darned thing open, hehe.

Ahhh! -weird faces-.

Add-on:

Okay, lets say I want to kep the entire board, the size of it does not bother me at all. What would be the best kind of case to use, because I want the cart to load on top and have the buttons. I do not want the regular N64 case though seeing as I want the screen under the cart loader, like directly, any suggestions?

Like this but, could I put the screen on top of the case, and still have it look half decent?

If you don't relocate the cartridge slot, have the cartridge come out the bottom, and stack the screen and N64 boards.

Try this. To scale mobo, screen and controller bits. Working for me :P .
