Semi-dedicated Xbox server?

Is there any way you can set up an Xbox to be a file server, but still be able to play games on it whenever you wanted to?
Ideally you would never have to turn it off between games.

Nope, cant be done. You either need to run linux or xmbc. *I know xbmc has smb support, but not sure if you can actually host files via smb through xbmc. iirc it can only access files via smb.*
If thats the case, sorry, linux is your only choice.
Consider looking around pawn shops for a 2nd xbox, they're really cheap now, and you can remove the dvd drive, stick in a 2nd hard drive, and create a low power, REALLY cheap NAS. It will be much more configurable than those NAS boxes you get from the big stores. *no hardware raid support though, but with only 2 drives, you don't really need it*

No, but you can set it up to do both. Run Xbox Linux for server time. Turn off and boot EvoX, etc to play games movies.

You can only do one at a time. But i do recommend just buying another one.

Do you mean a file server on your local LAN, or an HTML server for the rest of the internet. If you just want a personal file server, just use XBMC or any other dash, hook it up to your network, and FTP into it anytime you want. If you want a website server, you'll have to use Xbox Linux (which is really easy to use), with Apache.

No, he (the guy who wants to know) just wants a personal file server that he never has to turn off, and can always access file on weather he's playing games or not. I'm not talking about a web server.
