SpongeBuell,

I just bought a Chevy Uplander - it comes loaded with entertainment featues: DVD system, 6-Disc in-dash CD changer, and XM satellite radio. It also come with 2 wireless headsets so people in the back seats can listen to a different radio station (and/or the DVD) from what the driver is listening to. In fact, on the way to church yesterday, my wife and I were listening to a comedy station on XM, my son was listening to a different radio station through the headset and my daughter was listening to Shrek through her headset, which was playing on the DVD.

The cd player will play CDs with MP3s burned on them.

While it is not really a great leap in technology - most new DVD players will play MP3 CDs - it is a nice touch for an automobile. Especially for long family trips, which seems to be exactly what the Uplander was designed for. Figure a 700MB CD will hold about 175 CD quality MP3s (~4MB ea at 128Mhz), so that is around 1050 songs on the 6 CDs. Not quite a harddrive as Ben suggested, but not too shabby.

BTW, I told myself recently that I would never buy an American made car again (other than trucks or SUVs), but I couldn't resist the Uplander. I am totally please so far - it is really an amazing vehicle. Time will tell if my pleasure holds up, but after 2 weeks all is well.

I also swore that I'd never buy a mini-van, but ...

HOW DARE U MENTION ANOTHER FORUM!!!!

GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only kidding :P

I have my Carputer built waiting on the 7" XGA Touchscreen (coming in 2 days) its a great system for the car and I like it :)

But back in the Day the first and most popular HDD Head Unit was the Rio Car (think thats the name) then came the empeg it used the HDD caddy's so you install the HDD caddy in the PC and you slot the hdd into the cady upload the music then take it out and slot it into the car :)

Was pretty smart but they stoped making them a while ago altho you can still buy 1 :)

I still think a carputer is better you can play emu's and games when bored but the interface can be anything you want :)

you can play mp3/ogg/wma/mp2 any type of format even mods and midi's if u liked :)

You can play divx dvd mpeg/vcd evem mov files :) I could be crusing to the beach and the people in the back seat can watch bens Lizard of Death movie :D

Also you can listen to radio you can control your phone and you can even use GPS to have navigation (I love GPS having a female say turn left in 500m then 200m the turn left is very handy)

There are huge possibilitys like rearview camera or even frontview or side view there are touchscreens fingerpads numpads mini keyboards you name it there is also Wifi for wireless net or u can use your phone for the net.

It's got LOTS of possibilitys people are reading the stock sensors on the engine etc and outputting to the LCD and they are even controlling the windows lights etc from the PC

So much possiblity but i'll shutup now ;)

Geeze, there's no way I'm going there. I can't stand super strict moderation (not saying that there should be anarchy, but sometimes things get way out of hand)

Thats a nice looking classic you have.

I'm looking to either but a Jeep, Dakoda(sp), full size truck or get the La Baren we have before I get a new radio/mp3 player.

Well the oldest car that a Carputer has been put into is 1958 i think it was

Carputer is a great addition I think as it has a lot of extra's :)

Plus if u get a wifi and router (or just another wifi card) you can transfer music and movies to the car while you parked :)

Right now I brought a XGA LCD that flips out of the dash and has 2 AV inputs and you can set one AV input to overide the VGA signal :)

So what i've got is a backup cam hooked tot he reverse lights so when i hit reverse the lights go on the camera powers up and the LCD detects the signal and displays it then when i put it into drive the reverse lights go out so the cam shuts of and no signal is detected so it switched to VGA again :)

Pretty cool huh hehe

Also the LCD only uses 1Amp ;)

this is about as close as you'll get for what my car (Jeep Wagoneer) looks like. Love driving it, hate paying for its gas (15 MPG, 6.3 KPL)

http://www.cardatabase.net/search/photo ... d=00002826

this is a few years off, but the biggest difference is the color shade (mine is darker)

best of all, it still has less than 100,000 miles on it :D

Triton: Maybe you should make a carputer that matches the timeline. You know, a tube transistor based one
