I've started my first portable project--sort of. I have almost no experience and not much time to invest or money to spend, so I used my regular (not mini) SNES as a first time project.
I didn't want to risk breaking it, as I only have one, so I didn't open it up. Instead, I took a screen I had lying around that's supposed to be used with the Gamecube (thank god they have the same video cable), and attached it to the top of my SNES, right behind the cartridge opening. This can be powered by a chargeable base that I'm going to later add to the system, but my question is this. Is there any way to take the standard powered cable from the SNES (the one with the "brick" at the end), open it up, and attach it to household batteries (AA, AAA, maybe C)?

Making a battery that you can plug into the normal power slot can be done very easily. All you have to do is attach the part of the AC adapter that plugs into the SNES to a batter that is capable of running your setup. Be sure that you get the polarity right though, because if you mess up and do it wrong it will fry the 7805 and you'll have to desolder it and solder in a new one. If I'm not mistaken, the positive goes around the negative on the SNES power cord.
The portable SNES that I built sounds a lot like your idea. Here's a pic of mine. In this one the screen is attached yet, but I'm holding it in place.
