TV Boy II composite output?

hi, I got bored today and dug out the Systema TV Boy II I picked up dirt cheap at a car boot sale a few years ago to do an unusual hack, make it a wireless Atari 2600 games system.

The unit only has an RF tv output so I tried directly wiring up audio & video sockets from the input to the RF unit, audio worked fine but the colour wasn't right and appeared washed out.

So then I tried hooking the AV output to a 1000mW AV transmitter (complete power overkill but it was just a test) and the received video had proper colour, so I then tried wiring up what I wanted to be the final solution as it would neatly fit inside the TV Boy case, a 50mW AV transmitter from inside one of those pinhole spy cameras, sound was fine but that too had washed out colour on the received AV signal.

Does anyone know how I can solve this colour problem?

I have a cruddy old STN pocket tv that doesn't have AV input, just RF, both that and TV Boy run off 4x AAs which almost means they're destined to be hacked together.

I'll save the wireless screen option for another unit, got my eye on a Radica Megadrive thingamajig and I have a Casio EV-660 on the way, perhaps a portable with built-in screen that can also wirelessly transmit the AV signal too because games still look good on a big screen.
