Expansion pack board...Multi-layered(3+) or not?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Expansion pack board...Multi-layered(3+) or not?

Post by ShockSlayer »

Well, through basic electronics, would it be possible to grind down the board to be less tall? Or is relocating the port a better idea?

I may end up relocating it, I just want to know how far I can go.

if you hold the board into a bright light (not the sun  ) and look through the board you can tell where a trace is. If its dark then don't cut it.

Just 2 layers. Not sure how much you can cut it down, but I know you can cut the jumper pack down a lot.

Alright then. I have one more question. Those traces that go to little holes, can i cut those holes off? Or is there rewiring needed.

the little holes are vias to the other side of the board. flip it over and be amazed as the little holes come out the other side and continue on their way.

no you cant cut them off without rewiring it all. which i would not recommend.

Meh I didnt Resize mine, all I did was a little cooling mod for the Expansion Pac, Just removed all the Plastic and Metal Caseing on it, too a old Heat Disc off an old fried N64 and Stuck it on the Expansion Pacs Ram chip and now the N64 is much more cooled down than with all that Useless plastic and Metal, and Its conveniant because the Heat Disc holes to help Dispence heat are aimed at the vent holes that go to the Main Heat Sink.

My N64 hasnt crashed once since I did this.

(your pictures are crappy but) i see what you mean now about the holes.

you could go down another row of holes with the cutting, probably. bring it flush with the heatsink.

If I'm right, the multitude of vias around the board are to connect the two ground planes on each side of the PCB. Two planes so close to each other creates sort of a capacitance effect, which is not good, so you want to minimize it as much as possible. I'd leave it be as - is.

but there are already like 6 capacitors on the board between ground and 3.3v
