Ok, this is extremely plausible. Can you go into detail like...uh, how many AAA's it takes?

If you can find any free space inside your laptop, I'll be amazed.

Still, to get the voltage you need, you'll have to build a LM317 regulator circuit to get a 1.5v output to run the MP3 player.

I have two ideas that you could try.

1 wire it to the main speaker.

or

2 wire it to the mic input so that you can change the volume on the computer.

Thats just my idea :P s tell me what you think of them.

This sounds like a fun little project. Should be real easy too. First off, get yourself a 1.5V regulator. To avoid having to use adjustable regulators, thus adding additional parts, I was able to find a 1.5V fixed 100mA regulator in a TO-92 case (like the size of a transistor). It requires no external parts (not even smoothing caps), so it's just as easy to use as a 7805. Oh, and it's only $0.41 on Mouser. Check it out. Here's the datasheet for it. Power it with a 5V line on your laptop. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Okay, so that takes care of power. As far as the audio goes, I would wire the audio output directly to the line in port on your laptop, not the mic input, if you can help it. This will allow you to adjust the volume of the MP3 player in the Windows sound mixer independently of your actual laptop sounds. It also allows you to take advantage of your laptop's amp. The amp in the MP3 player might not even be powerful enough to drive your laptop speakers by themselves anyway.

Does this answer any of your questions or does it just leave you more confused? :P (I don't know how much you know about electronics 'n stuff... so...)

^thanks for the help, but i didnt go that way..

instead im going to run it off the AAA socket its got. i wired it up to the speaker and everything works great. i took the cheap way out.. i actually just soldered the wires onto tabs that were visible on the headphone input. one on the top of it, and one were it connects to the board. it actually works. now i just need to cut out a window in the laptop.
