LOL. Look at what Popular Science said about the Wii

in the latest issue (April 2007) of PopSci, it says this:

How Does it Know Where You're Pointing?
When infrared light beamed from the controller hits a sensor strip above or below your TV, the Wii registers the controller's exact position. As you move, the accelerometer tracks how it's shifted realative to that spot, so the Wii can determine precisely what you're aiming at

Now, we all know that is wrong. also, it incorrectly lables the Wii's Disc Drive as a DVD Drive.

I am rather dissapointed in PopSci's blatant errors. Things like this bring into question the accuracy of their other articles.

Sometime in 2007 Nintendo will be releasing a Wii capable of DVD playback, according to a spokesperson.

Even though software will be used to enable DVD-Video functionality, it apparently "requires more than a firmware upgrade" and cannot therefore be implemented through the WiiConnect24 network.

It is a DVD drive, but doesn't play DVD movies. Technically, the disks are indeed encrypted DVD's.

I love it how everyone gets it backwards, theres no LEDs in the controller!

I love it how Vskid gets it wrong. What about the LEDs which show which player's wiimote it is, you know those 4 glowy lights at the bottom of the wiimote

What? If there are other LEDs, they aren't for the system to sense.

EDIT: Oh, I see what you're talking about, but I still meant that the Wiimote doesn't have any LEDs used for sensing.

The "sensor bar" is just some IR LEDs. The Wiimote uses a CMOS sensor to detect the points of light said LEDs produce. How else would <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXmBx1AeHMs">candles</a> work as a "sensor bar".

The name is just marketing so Joe Sixpack can make sense of this confusing concept. Unfortunately the article on their website only covers the accellerometers, so the only place to see the error is in the print edition. (Go get it. We'll wait for you to get back. Don't get it? Such a blatant error in a technology magazine makes me question their other articles, or at least those written by the same author.

Ben, you should write them a letter pointing out their mistake. Maybe coming from you they won't just throw it away.
