Quick question

I've been getting into PS1 games a lot lately, and I was wondering, how much would I have to pay for a PS1 portable (Ben's CNC one) with a modchip installed? Because right now, it's either the PS1 portable or a 360. I want the portable because of my PS1 game collection, and the 360 for the games I like after playing them. So that means I have about $300 to spare. Would that be enough?

Hmm I'm not sure of Benjamin's prices but I don't think $300 would be enough. He sells AtariVCSp for $350, so a psone would be more like $450 and then the modchip installation makes it around $475 - $500.

honestly, Ben's cases are very expensive, but they do cost a lot to make so that pans out

look up the playboy thread by g-force, polycase as a case right in you price range of free samples that will work just fine

then the rest is up to you and your bargaining prowess

I honestly don't see spending more than say $100 on a psone portable if you are a good haggeler

screen-40
batteries-15 at power101
misc- 15

I think those are fair prices and ou sohuld just wait for bargains

Yeah, I don't know the first thing about soldering, that's why I'd have to get somebody to do it, which would mean an extra $50 to $100 for labor.

By the way, does anybody know if dkap01 would still be interested in making another PS1 Portable? I don't know since his website it down, and don't know if he is on this forum.

I didn't know there was another site, I must have been looking at an older site of his. Either way, I sent him an email asking about it.

And I don't want to buy a PSP because I don't want to mess with the whole firmware thing, and even if I buy a 4GB memory stick (which is pretty expensive), it still won't be able to hold all my PS1 games. And plus, the PSP doesn't have rumble (correct me if I'm wrong), doesn't have a second analog stick, or L2/R2 buttons, which means some games (such as Ape Escape) would be impossible to play. And I don't even know where I could find a PSP for less than $150 without the basic accessories other than bidding for it on eBay. And I get to show off to my friends how weird I am.

alriht rellizate you brig forth a valid point, but you see if he just takes those factors into consideration, he can work through them, and besides, if he asks plenty of questions along the way on proper electronics handling, we can help him NOT fry his stuff, Also, if you READ BEN's BOOK on the how-toos, as long as you don't get impatient, you SHOULD be fine

So you're sure that a person with NO soldering experience could build something like this? And a question relating to that, how hard is it to de-solder something if I accidentally solder it wrong, and is there a chance of permanently damaging what I'm soldering on?

And kind of an opinion-based question, but which PS1P of Ben's do you like better, the hand-built or the CNC (I have to decide which case/kit to buy)? I'm leaning towards the hand-built, since the screen is bigger, cheaper, and easier to find, and it looks bigger in general, which I'm guessing means easier to build (with all the space), and I really like the disc under the screen. But I also like the CNC one for its portability. Which brings me to yet another set of questions: how long would the battery life be for the 5" screen compared to the 3" screen? Is it a big difference? And does either one have better-quality picture/color/sharpness?

And one last question: how hard would it to install a modchip with the following installation diagram (question for those who have built portables before)?:
