well since bits of magnetic parts can become weaker over time it seems logical that using it more would in theory have these bits rewritten or overwritten more. Making it less corrupt over time.

Starting up is what hard drives hate, the heads have to wait for the disk to get up to speed and make the air bearing, and just slide across the disk until then.

Yeah, this report doesn't really say anything at all. I've learned to look beyond what reports try to make you believe by reading Freakonomics.

I recommend that everyone read Freakonomics as soon as possible!

I second that notion.

I have a harddrive from 1994 and I shut that computer down everynight.... So in my case turning off the computer hasnt one bit killed my harddrive. Leaving your computer on all the time even in standby wastes electricity which in turn wastes oil so do your electric bill and the world a favor and turn off your computer when your done with it

Now back on the topic of computers.... My computer never is turned off though. I just close the lid and the screen goes black (the "do nothing" option under "When I close my laptop...." in "Power Options" in the Control Panel).
