PSOne screen LED mod + brightness buttons?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

PSOne screen LED mod + brightness buttons?

Post by Electric Rain »

Okay, this may be a n00b question, and it might also already have been answered. (I searched and I couldn't find it! Honest!) So... forgive me...

Every LED mod I see just gets wired straight to the screen's 7805. So... the brightness buttons would be rendered useless, am I right? (I don't know why I just now thought of this, maybe it's because I finally got my hands on a PSOne screen a week ago.) I assumed the brightness buttons controlled a digital pot, which controlled the CCFL's brightness. Is this correct? Every portable I see with a PSOne screen and an LED mod still has brightness buttons on it... they can't ALL be inoperable, can they? If I'm right... then can someone tell me if ANYONE has ever successfully wired up their LEDs to work with the brightness buttons? Thanks... and sorry for the n00b question...

No, I think the brightness buttons don't actually change the brightness of the backlight. They change the screen's brightness. So having them bottom doesn't save any power at all, actually. So, yes they will still work after LED modding the screen, as they don't change anything to do with the backlight.

I thought that might be the only other case... Huh... that's kinda dumb... I'm adding a digital pot for my LEDs! :P Thanks man.

Rellizate is right. And just so you know, I used 6 LED's because 4 weren't bright enough. I don't think you'll be needing to make them darker.

Why would you do that? They fit nicely inside the CCRT slot (or whatever the light is called). They don't need to be facing inwards, they get difused. Just rough them up a bit with sandpaper first.

Not at all. Look closely at the extremetch article's pictures, or open up yours. THere's a big line. Also, someone on this forums didd this (extremesonic?) and posted pictures.

As you can see, there is one "C" shaped channel alonge the top, bottom, and right sides. The LEDs will fit anywhere along that.

So which is good; bypassing cv23 or adding extra leds to get the screen brighter?

I'd say extra LEDs... the brightness mod just... doesn't seem right to me. That resistor is there for a reason. I'm afraid jumping it might just shorten the life of your screen... I'm probably wrong, but I worry about these things, so... Plus it washes out your colors a bit. I'm a videophile, so I'd rather not deal with that.

Thanks. Should you use the same resistor (10ohm) regardless of however many leds you use or does it change according to the number of leds?

It changes, use this to calculate it.
