Linux Question??

Is their a build of linux that you can just use by restarting or by running a program because i want to try linux but not delete windows. So can anyone please help me???

Knoppix, Ubuntu, some SuSE versions, Slax, and DSL. These all boot from the disc, and only mount the hard drive as a read-only media. These will offer you a chance to try out Linux, and more importantly see if all your hardware is recognized.

I download most of my linux iso images via bittorrent, but there are a few sites you can go to.

or try going to the home pages for the distros, they will have a download page.

So if I wanted ubuntu but not to get rid of windows what would I do??

Download the .iso, extract it (or whatever its called when you put an iso on a CD the right way) to a CD, restart and if your BIOS is set to boot from CD then it should boot up. Then just select the "boot from CD" thing on the menu that comes up.

If you only want to run Ubuntu from the cd you don't have to do anything.
If you want to install Ubuntu and Windows, you need to have 2 partitions. If you only have 1 and windows is already installed, you should be able to defragment the drive and resize the partition, then create another. When you install Ubuntu it should detect Windows and install a bootloader.

Just burn the Live CD ISO and boot off that. It won't touch your hard drive.

You could try using another virtualization program like VMware or Bochs.

OK i got the ubuntu iso and burned it to a cd and when i try to run it there is a splash page that says opening browser then it goes away and nothing happens so what do i do??

So it booted up and went to a screen that had boot options, and you did the regular start? Try the safe video mode, I have to do that with my All-in-Wonder graphics card.

You have to boot the computer off the CD, not open it in Windows.

Go into your BIOS Setup program and set the boot priority so the disc drive comes before the hard drive. Then leave the disc in your computer and reboot. It should boot off the disc.
