Just started using my Linux PC...

I've had it for a while, but I have never really done anything with it until now. I'm kindof just learning how to use linux, I hope to get rid of Windows entirely at some point. For now I want to start simple. I know that a lot of you use linux, so I was wondering, what is the best media player for linux. My Ubuntu distro came with Totem, but It won't play any formats, not even .mp3. Thanks guys.

ive used xmms and it worked pretty good (on a comp with a 400mhz transmeta crusoe and 80mb ram)

You have to get the machine connected to the interweb & download a package in order to get the MP3 codec.

Get <a href="http://www.xmms.org/">XMMS</a> and <a href="http://www.videolan.org/">VLC</a> and you're good to go

(when it comes to media...)

Of course it doesn't play MP3s... MP3 is a patented format, and they would get in trouble for distributing the codec with the system. That doesn't stop some other distros from distributing the codec (like DSL)...

You should be able to play Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Theora formats without expending any extra effort. Go on Wikipedia and find a media file (movie clip, music clip, a "hear this article" link, etc.) and it should play for you.

VLC right out of the box should be able to play MP3s. (VLC, in my opinion, is the best all-around simple media player. It can also stream, transcode, and do all sorts of other advanced tricks.)
