CompUSA Closes over 120 stores

I guess they're feeling the icy sting of NewEgg, Tiger Direct, and MicroCenter.

Seriously, they charge a LOT for their stuff!

The local CompUSA is closing and is offering sale prices and selling fixtures, so I figured they would give me a decent price for a floor model Mac Mini. No dice. (None of the floor models are any cheaper than the new units, regardless of manufacturer.) Everything's between 5 and 10% off now, which still makes their merchandise more expensive than the Christmas "deals".

Maybe eventually they'll mark their merchandise down to Microcenter's everyday price. But maybe not.

I have always criticized brick-and-mortar computer stores for their inability to offer competitive prices. I was wondering when something like this would happen.

Yeah I was kind of surprised when my Linux instructor told me that CompUSA was closing all the stores in Michigan, save for the one in Lansing. He also added that TigerDirect might be picking up some of the stores, another thing that surprised me, cause I though it was just an online store not a physical one too.

You'll have to wait a bit for the really good deals. The company that they had do the liquidating is known for having normal prices (more or less) for the first month or so, then going cheap when they have to.

I have always criticized brick-and-mortar computer stores for their inability to offer competitive prices. I was wondering when something like this would happen.

Unfortunately, it's usually impossible for them to compete due to the overhead that they have to pay for. An online-only store doesn't need to pay for a nice fancy building, displays, etc.

The thing is that if you need to return or exchange something, it's way less of a hassle to go to the local Best Buy or Circuit City and return it. The 'potential' for better/easier service is the tradeoff for the higher prices.

CompUSA and their overinflated prices really have nothing going for them. If you want it cheap, get it online. If you want the comfort of less return hassle and not having to deal with possibly shipping something back and forth, go to any store...EXCEPT for CompUSA.

Wow! So all the Michigan stores are closing, eh, Sparkfist? Let me know if you ever get information on what ones will be taken over by Tiger Direct, because I have about 3 in my general area, as well as yours.

CompUSA sucked for me because the nearest one is 1 hour to and back. In fact, the last time I was even there was maybe 1998. That particular store is not closing.

I will still buy from everything from newegg though!
