PS2 Modular Portable

Well I have an idea, not an original one, but hey one nonetheless. The only thing I really need help on is the voltage of the battery to use. I just really want to make an outside modular battery that can be connected and stored in the expansion bay and connect to the power port. Hopefully I don't have to input 120v to make this work.

If you do not understand my blabbering I'll explain a little better, try to anyways!!! I am using the old fat PS2, since I see no faith in making a smaller portable, I hope to make a modular device to fit it. I am trying to create a simple battery, that will be stored in the expansion bay, and have a cord that will be plugged into the outside power port, and thats mostly it...

Anyways I only need to know what voltage the battery should be, if I can use a battery like this that is!!! I'm sort of new to portablizing, so I do not know much about batteries.

Oh, that's a great idea. There is a problem though. On the fat PS2s, the PSU is inside the unit. This means that you have to feed it 120VAC if your plugging in from the outside. You'd have to perform some simple inside hacks to do what you want...

Thought that, PSU is that board inside on the top of the unit with the 4-pin connector I'm guessing, it has the power port and switch plugged into it. What all would I'd have to do?

More like type 1, except on the top there are two white cylinder looking object in the picture, on mine they're black.

Okay... come to think of it, nevermind. That part shouldn't matter.

I can't seem to find a good picture of the PSU connector on the PS2 mobo, but what I know is that as long as you get/build a 12V battery pack, you can wire it up straight to your PS2 mobo where the PSU plugs in. I don't know how much YOU know about what you're doing... so I'm not sure if this is enough information. Can you work with it? Any other questions?

That make sense, the only thing I have a question on is on the mobo theres four pins that come up that connect to the board in the picture, would I connect then there or somewhere else on the mobo? If so which of the 4 pins would I connect the power to?

Pretty much... I honestly have no idea why there's even 4 pins to begin with. So, you'll either have to break out a multimeter or wait 'till someone here that knows better posts an ImageShack hosted, poorly created MS-Paint diagram showing you which pins to connect to. :P (J/k guys... you know I love all of your m4d Paint $ki11s... >.>)

Now for my embarrassment, I have a confession, I never was taught how to use a multimeter. It is sad I know, I was depraved as a child. How would I go around finding which is which on the four pins? I have a multimeter here, but no real clue what to do with it except for testing batteries like I was in networking. I feel so sad now...

couldnt you get a network adapter and plug in a 12v battery to the molex connector? that would supply the 12v to the appropriate lines without having to madify anything. you could even stick the battery in the bay and not have to worry about mounting it.

:lol: Don't worry about it. You're better than some people here that don't even know what a multimeter is, let alone HAVE one.

1. Put your multimeter in continuity mode. If you don't know what that is, then just... well... give me the model number or a picture of your meter and I'll tell you where you have to set your dial. Or, find your manual and look it up. Most multimeters will beep when you achieve continuity.

2. Okay, we'll find the ground first. Look at the diagram below. Place one probe on point 5, and go through points 1-4 with the other probe. I wouldn't be surprised if more than one of the terminals carry ground. The big metal thing (point 5) is a heatsink, which are almost always grounded, so it's a good reference point.

3. Now that we've found ground, it's time to plug in your PSU (be careful!) and set your multimeter to DC voltage mode.

4. Place one probe on the ground terminal you just found, and then go through the other three terminals on the connector with the other probe. Whichever terminal gives you a 12V (approx.) reading on your multimeter is your 12V terminal. :wink:

Now that I'm thinking about it... two contacts are probably ground, one is 12V and the other is probably for standby power... maybe? *shrugs*
