Since i got my nes working again , i've started a new case , here's some mock up pictures because the case i have now isn't worthy of a photo .





Comment with ideas , say something constructive , even if I am a n00b.

Cool design, kind of a semi-laptop. It might be easier on you if you just forget the hinge and just put the screen right side up where it would have been face down.

I was thinking about that , but then it would just be like a gameboy , and I was going for something that I hadn't really seen before (except for the SP , but that don't count ).

Oh, I see, you just wanted to be original.
Depending on the size of screen you get and the size of the rest of the portable, you might be able to have the screen cover the whole bottom half instead of just half of it.
Keep in mind the difficulty of the hinge, I would say that you experiment with that first to see if you can make it work so that you don't build the case and arrange the guts for the flip screen, only to find you can't make the hinge.

Indeed , the hinge is the part i'm dreading the most so i'm not gonna try anything clever until I know I can do it.

Also , I had an idea about using a power button under neath the screen . I was gonna put the original nes reset button under the closed screen , so when the screen is closed , it's off , but turns on when you open it. Do you think that's possible?

Also , i'm going to use a PSone screen , and I was planning to keep the size as close to the size of the nes board as I can (not height ways , length and width ways). Can you elaborate on your idea about covering the whole bottom half?

Just have the whole bottom half covered when the screen is closed, like a laptop or SP. Might be possible with a PSone screen, or at least close.

The reset button might work, if it cuts off power to the whole system it might work, but then the screen would still be on... Maybe you could take the reset switch and wire it directly up to the battery so that when the screen is down, nothing gets power and everything gets power when opened. Might want a secondary switch that also controls power to the whole system so that it doesn't have to come on when the screen is opened. That might get annoying if the screen gets opened on accident and drains the battery without you knowing.

Its kinda strange that with all this knowledge and ideas, I still haven't completed a portable. Maybe I'll make one with the NES I got yesterday.

If you want something nobody's seen before, put the controls on the underside of the portable.

Here's a new concept I thought would look better than the previously posted one , all of the components aren't on this picture so it'd help if you imagine them.



The button in the lid space is a reset button as stated above and there is a main power switch at the top left above the dpad.

This one? or the first one?

There second one will be rounder if made.

Make the buttons flush or make a square area around it indented so the screen doesn't press on the buttons. Thats my idea!

There's problem with that , i'm using an actual nes , so the board has to be some sort of rectangular shape, so i'd need a mahusive screen to cover the whole thing.

Ahh Gotcha, so this is bigger than I thought. If you are using a PS1 screen, I'd say number two. Why? No reason, just that looks sweet. Its like a Playtendo.
