2600jr smaller pcb

Post by A.J. Franzman »

On a slightly related note, has anyone successfully miniaturized a 2600 Jr. SINGLE chip board? I had a look at the site with the schematic of it last night, and it seems simple enough. I notice one feature is missing from the "Jan" IC, though: it has only one audio out pin - no stereo sound option! Unless the builder puts in a "fake stereo" synthesizer circuit, which would add parts and defeat the purpose of using the single-chip board.

Just to answer the question.

Yes someone has make the Atari jr smaller. No we dont know how it was done, but believe me when I say it is major reconstrution to make it work again. If you want to see what it looks like take a look at the Vagabon 2000 Ben recently finished.

Wow what an amazing story. I'm also beinging to think Ben is a little nuts. He's talked to dead or dying Atari motherboards on atleast two occations.

Face it, the combined sanity of all the members of this forum is less than that of a grapefruit.

I blame it on the lack of women on the forums, as well as squirrels...
Warranty-Voiding fun!

Yup Ben had the schematics are made up and it was like 2.5" x 2.5" He just fried the chip

I know he fried it, that's why I wrote "successfully". Also, I saw that he wanted to both:
   A. cut down the original 1-chip board and make it work, AND
   B. design and fabricate his own 1-chip PCBs for use in his own projects and possible sales to other interested parties.
Since he didn't specify exactly how far along he got with this before killing his chip, and has made no further mention of it, I figured he probably either didn't complete his custom board design or didn't get a chance to fully test it. It's also possible that he discovered the 1-chip Atari Jr. is so hard to find as to not be worthwhile to seek out for portabilizing projects.

If he did post schematics and/or PCB artwork, I didn't find them.

I tested all the circuits and pin outs of the chip, and got them all figured out except for video. However, by that time I had managed to fry the Atari. Since the one-chip models are hard to find, work on that idea came to a halt. HOWEVER! I do have my custom circuit board 90% designed, and if I ever get my hands on another 1-chip Atari 2600 Junior board, I can figure the rest out.
Its on the first page, he's rather far along, but as he put it without a chip to exparement with whats the point in contiuing to work on the PCB.

Sparkfist, thanks for the quote, I forgot that he said he fried it before getting the video to work.

JackFrost22, there is a schematic scan at http://www.atarimuseum.com/ahs_archives ... N-chip.gif but it does not give the part number of the chip. Given the early date on the schematic, it may not have had a part number yet, in fact this drawing may not match the real schematic for a production 1-chip 2600 Jr.
