Any Modder Interested?

Post by thundergod12 »

I would like to suggest a revised Nes portable mod. I've mentioned this before a time or two, but I don't think anyone took me serious. Basically, it would be the same Nes portable that benheck and several others have built, but instead of having to load the bulky nes cartridge, you should add a usb port to load your LEGALLY backed up Nes Roms. This could in fact allow you to increase the screen size or further miniaturize the system.

This idea is open to any modder interested, not just benheck. I don't even know where to start on something like this and I also don't even know if this is possible. But I do know that I would be willing to talk about how much it would cost to make and ship. If anyone is interested contact me through my website at thundergod22489.net or through this thread.

The usb port thing isn't exactly easy. It would require a lot of work. Plus it's (almost) impossible to emulate every mapper chip.

I have no technical experience in these matters what so ever, so I will take you word for it. Is there possibly any alternative that would allow you to load Legally backed up roms? If not, just how much time and money could such a device end up costing? Thanks for your reply and the info.

If you could find a flash cartridge for the NES it wouldn't be too difficult; just hardwire it to the motherboard. This idea would be really simple to pull off with the 2600 thanks to the Krokodile Kart, but I don't know if there is any similar flash cart for the NES.

I started searching google for a Nes Flash Cart and I came up with this site, http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/03/ ... -sale.html

It explains almost exactly what your talking about. So with this, could a Nes portable be made to play roms? Sorry to keep asking this, but I don't know much about modding and hacking.

When this comes out, would anyone be interested in trying a go at another Nes Mod granted that the aforementioned Nes Flash Cart works. Like I said earlier, I would be more than happy to pay for the cost and time spent laboring over it.

You can program make custom NES cartridges, but its no easy task. Far from a simple USB plug-and-play simplicity like you are wanting.

To do something like you're asking, a person would have to have a deep knowledge of coding and hardware. I'm sure it's possible, just look at Super Joy 3's and their preloaded games, but I don't know if anyone would do it on their own time. But if anyone ever did... They would become a legend, I'm sure.

I'd beg to differ!

I think this PCB is for sale in pieces, much assembly required!

Also, I do not think it supports all the mappings...

If you're not using the original cartridges, why bother? Get a gameboy advance and a flash card.

It's for a plain and simple reason. I would like to play nes games on a nes portable...even if the games are backed up roms.

A long time ago I found a NOAC with the games stored on a flash chip. Having no ability to flash it or write/dump anything to it (since my advanced digital electronics skillz arent that advanced at this point) I just left it aside, and had no idea really what to do with it. Since then I've removed the flash chip, but I dont have any use for it.

Back in the day...

Mabye I'l work on it sometime.

I theory, yes you could. Although it would take a while to figure out what sort of flash the NOAC had.

Pretty cool though.

Well, since we have determined that this is possible, what would be a guesstimated price on something such as this?

everything's possible. your speedbump is going to come with mmc support. (or mappers in emuspeak) They're what nintendo, and other NES game manufacturers used to increase the ammount of rom nes was able to access.

I don't think too many of the superjoy type games feature large chunks of nes rom and when they do they are usually broken down into smaller 'games'. I suspect a few have support for one of the mmc's (they have to have something in there for accessing their chunk) but I doubt any handle multiple types of mmc.

since I'm a mind reader, I'm thinking that you're looking for awesome compatability with the best games on NES at something under the $500 range. probably want to modify that, lowering game quality expectations or raising the price quite a bit.
