Pisses me off to no extent. I got sympatico, and im pretty sure someone is stealing my internet. It has gone from 100+ kbs. downloads to 18kbs. I'm really getting pissed. Is there anyway anyone knows how to configure a firewall? or catch whoever is doing this.

I'd assume you're using a wireless router, otherwise they can't really steal your bandwidth. I'd say hope that you have a good router and change the MAC address table to only allow connections from the MACs that you specify.

how about filesharing programs, like Kazaa? People could be downloading from you, and I don't think simply closing the window stops it.

if you have a wireless router, you can use a program called airsnare to see if anyone is leeching off of your wireless connection.

just make sure you have a list of all the MAC addresses on your network, so you know which entries are legit, and so you don't get paranoid. I forgot to enter my router's MAC address and was worried someone had cracked my WEP key.

Speaking of cracking WEP keys, its astonishingly easy. You're pretty much not going to keep anybody out of your wirless network using WEP if they really want to get in. However, it is usefull for keeping casual hijackers off.

Sam didn't say what kind of connection he has, but you guys forgot about cable. If there are a lot of users on his branch, that would explain the reduced bandwidth.

Sam, if your internet connection is cable, try comparing your download speeds at peak times vs. off-peak times, say 6:00pm and 3:00am in the middle of the week. If there is a big difference, this is probably the cause. The only way to do anything about it would be to switch to another type of service (such as DSL), or nag the cable company to install more wire and split your branch. Good luck with that!

Hey, sry it took so long to post back, been a little busy, anyways yes i am using a router, Dlink to be exact. Im looking into airsnare as we speak, I am not very good with "internet, part of computers, i know a lot about the other stuff (by a lot i mean average) but yeah ill post back in a bit.
