Volume & Brightness buttons not working

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Volume & Brightness buttons not working

Post by Rellizate »

Hey,

I have this porblem with my 1st party psone screen. I rewired all of the tacts to my own tacts on some pc board. They all worked fine. Some time later, one of the wires that had come from the original Volume + tact button on the PSone PCB had come loose. I soldered it back on. Now none of the tacts on the PC board that I soldered do anything at all, and the original Brightness + & - and the Volume - buttons don't no anything either. When I press the original Volume + button, the volume slider thing shows, but it just stays there. I can't see if it is putting the volume up, as the volume bar is on full.

I checked the furtherst right pin on the right plug (when looking at the front of the board). It seems to be getting around3v. I don't know if this is correct. I tried supplying it with 5v from the screen's 7805 - no difference.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Sounds like a wrongly-wired or shorted wire. I know crap like this happens to me because I have conductive flux. (I should really get some non-conductive stuff)

Use a multimeter, check your connections, and check adjacent but not connected spots as well.

How would one incorrect wire stop all the original buttons from working though?

Perhaps something is inadvertently soldered so that the volume up button is registering as being continuously pressed? That would explain why the volume is up all the way and none of the other buttons register. Can't really think of anything else without seeing it.

Well I don't know, but the volume only thinks its continually pressed after I press the original tact and release it. Even if I don't do that, and press say the brightness + button, it doesn't register.

If it's only 4 buttons, try building another board when you have the time.

What do you mean? I was wiring up the tacts my self. That is what got me into this inthe first place.

I mean redo them. It's 8 wires and 16 solder joints. Shouldn't take too long, and then you can rule out your original job.

Right. I will probably try that later.

Thanks, I will post the results.

If anyone comes up with any (more?) ideas on why this isn't working, feel free to post.

Thanks it now works!
One wire was wrong and was making the whole thing act weirdly.

Excellent :D I love it and I hate it when it's something as simple as just redoing my wiring job...

Oh and you were correct Joe. That was the problem.
Thanks. :D
