I want to hack game consoles.
Moderator: Moderators
I want to hack game consoles.
I want to become a game console hacker and I need to know where to start, not that I want to become ULTRA UBER like Benji, but I want to be good at it.
I don't expect an answer from BenHeck (I don't think i ever will) but I would like somebody from the forums who is skilled and expierienced to answer me.
Thnx.

How to be an awesome portablizer -
1. READ ALL THE STICKIES (yes its boring, but DO IT!)
2. Be nice and kind to everyone
3. Work hard at your portables, and try not to be overambitious. Don't expect a (insert Next-gen console) laptop in a day. (Or even a few months for that matter - and that's only if you're experienced).
4. Help people in the forum when you can.
5. Don't post randomly... (*hint hint*).
Enjoy BenHeck!

Read up on other peoples completed portables, posted here on the forums. There is lots of hidden info among the comments that will help you a lot.
Start out small, learn, and advance. Take a break if things get rough, its for FUN! remember that and you'll do great!
Also, check out www.portablesofdoom.org Some of it needs updating, but theres still a lot of basic info thats good.

If you have a spare NES lying around, it might be a good system to start with. Change the LED to a different color one, replace the 72-pin connector with a new one off eBay, learn how to install an S-Video connector on it (actually, I'm not sure if the IC outputs seperate chroma/luma signals or if it just outputs composite; someone awnser this...), & you can even create a stereo sound mod on the NES (I believe Ben has instructions on a page somewhere).
If you have a spare NES & SNES controller lying around, cut the connector off of the NES controller & the cable off the SNES one, & wire the cable to the NES controller. (the cable colors match up exactly as they should). It will then act as an SNES controller.

Just take stuff apart, solder things and play around.
Perhaps get a Saturn and older consoles and do 50/60 hz mod, region mod with switches.
Try to break apart circuit boards and make them smaller, connect them with wires etc...
It's a long road!
