I agree that's it's too soon for a new format, but every new format doesn't catch on til it's been around while, so Blue-Ray or whatever probably won't be mainstream until 2010 or so.
I think the problem with this is that things don't "catch on" until they're pratically out of date. I personally am against compression - although most DVD's look pretty good it's not like it's the "definitive" version of the movie, especially when films are now being made in HD.
I think it's funny that people are brainwashed to automatically think "digital is better" when it's often compressed and worse. Digital cable/Dish, IMHO, looks like HELL. Ever notice in a football game it's so compressed the grass turns into one flat color like a videogame? I was at a friend's watching The Count of Monte Crisco and the scene in the bathhouse (with the steam) looked so bad I thought I was playing a Sega CD game.
Even HDTV has compression artifacts, especially around graphics. Modern DVD's have it too, especially around subtitles (they look like they're in a bubble) or on the lines of animated films, even ones with good tranfers from Disney or the new Iron Giant disc. Or what about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? The close-up pan across the Grail Tablet looks like the image has leprosey and is sliding around the screen.
What if aliens or super robots dig up our civilization in a million years and they can't read or access anything we did because they don't have the compression codecs, or our magnetic/optical storage devices have failed? This sounds stupid but remember a lot of Egyption history was inaccessible until they found The Rosetta Stone.

We don't want to put the future archeologist robots out of business do we? 
As for blue-ray, it sounds nice, I just hope Sony dosnt screw it up like they did with those mini-VHS-tapes things, by not sharing the technology(I think Macintosh did something like that too).

First Cennar. Damn you thats what I was going to do, have a near complete sold-state computer in a PSX case once I got a nano ITX board.
Now for Beta. Yeah its small but what happened was not that Sony screwed it. The format had one major flaw and that was it went at odd incraments. For example hi res. was 1.5 hours, med. 3 hours, long but low was 4.5 hours. This kind of make it hard to fit a movie on one tape that was more than 90 minutes. And Sony being th greedy corperation it was and is today, came out with VHS. They sacraficed quailty to give you a 2, 4, 6 incrament tape/quality rating. I will say this that S-VHS is closer to Beta but it isnt quite there I say.
Also Beta's size is about 25-30 smaller. Too bad the VCRs of the time were not that small, the three I have are huge and weight like 50 pounds (or about 25kg).

Well wifi has limitations and isnt as mainstream as regular ethernet is. And to tell you ethernet isnt going anywhere for a while, as about a year ago they go transfer rates at 1gps.
