On my poor old iBook G4, the one I am using right now (no this is not my main computer) the bottom backlight (yes there are two) is begingin to only light at the ends not at the middle, the is a very noticible dark spot on the lower left of the screen. How long do you think I have till it blows?
Please say more then 5 minuits.....
Also please start a flame war about Mac vs micro$oft.... we all know Macs are better....

What you are describing is typical of a fluorescent bulb going out. You can't really tell how long it will last but you can buy replacement tubes for backlights. Best bet is probably ebay for a replacement.

If the screen is done, and you can't justify the price of replacement parts, make it a desktop computer. A laptop has all basic things one needs, anything else like extra USB ports, additional hard drive space, and other peripherals can be added. I've done that with my laptop, 2 external hard drives, a 4 port USB 2.0 hub, USB keyboard and wireless mouse, makes for a nice setup, and a very small foot print too.
Another thing is that you can physically add things to a laptop (ie solder to the board). I know there are a few you can find on Hackaday, and those could help you a lot. Additionally to this you can just do a case mod. Take it out of the laptop housing and mount it in a PC tower or a custom build case.

Problem is, this iBook g4, it is a little slow for desktop use... 
Anyways.. can't help the inevatble. This laptop has served me many good years. The poor thing is indestructable.
