Windows XP stuck on Boot Screen

Ok, for some reason, Windows is now being gay and is just stuck at the boot screen. The bar keeps on going and going, but it doesnt do anything. I heard that on my XP CD i can go in Recovery console and fix stuff. Well, what do I do in it?

PS: I'd like to solve this problem without completly wiping the Hard drive, i have important files still on this compy. I'm also doing a CHKDSK for now (running from CD)

Run linux or something from the cd, get all your files, and wipe the hard drive!

It would honestly take me days to get all my stuff back. I'm not dealing with days worth of downloading for WoW again. I want to know what to do. Obviously something just got messed up. It still boots, but i have no idea how to use Recovery, or how to fix my Windows Install.

Does anyone else out there know what i should do?

I will try again, and i also tryed Last Good Known config. So something in the Windows folder got screwed over. Unless maybe i should give it a few extra minutes to boot up (My normal boot time was under 30 seconds)

I'll let it go for about 10 minutes and see what happens.

this happened to me once. i reformatted and everything.... and it still got stuck

then it turned out that i had a lan cable was plugged into my switch at both ends... creating some kind of infinite loop. i guess it just got stuck on the network driver, cause removing it fixed the problem.

have you made any hardware changes recently?

Nope, right now i'm performing a Repair Installation. If this doesn't work, i don't know what will.

I'm still open to suggestions here. And thanks so far guys, you really help

EDIT: Ok, After the repair install rebooted my computer (for the first time, from the blue screen) It just went to the freaking stuck boot again. WTF!?

So what am i gonna do? I'm screwed

EDIT2: I let my PC on (Hoping it would do something) and it now says that my PC was scheduled for a CHKDSK (Right after the Repair Install) So now it's doing that....which usually takes like 2 hours. So, maybe it wlll fix itself. Who knows.

Looks like I'm screwed if this don't work

Should I take it as a bad thing if CHKDSK days:

File Record Segment XXXX is unreadable?

And those numbers range from like 5010 to 5455 so far (Theres been like 200 diff ones)

I take it my hard drive is dead, or is about to be?

Well, now my dad thinks this is all my fault, but whatever. I hate it when i get blamed because a compy dies. My dads compy thats like 6 years old died a few monthes back.

He doesnt understand how Hard Drives only live for a few years i guess. But this kinda sucks. I have to go buy a new Hard Drive, a 250 GB one. I have no money so basicly i'm wasting $15 a month for WoW which i cant play, and cant use a computer either.

This sucks. I'm now attempting to find a distro of linux that could look on the hard drive to see if i can rescue any of my dads files. Ubuntu doesnt work, and i forget if PCLinuxOS can read hard drives and USB flash drives

Anyone recommend anything?

Technically Challenged people are annoyign sometimes. (It's even worse when they think they understand but don't.)

Download and burn Ubuntu or Knoppix and use it to copy important stuff to a USB drive. As long as the files aren't encrypted you shouldn't have a problem.

Explain to him how hard drives spin at about 7200 RPM, which is like keeping your car floored in neutral. Of course something's going to wear out eventually, you have moving parts!

How old is this computer? I'm guessing 3-4 years?You shouldn't have to buy a new hard drive if it's not your computer, and even if they do make you buy one you shouldn't have to get a bigger, more expensive one. Buy a replacement that's the same size.

Yeah, I'm downloading Slax (After PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu both didnt work) I know Slax works. I've used it many times before.

I did a live chat with a Dell person and i have no idea how, but our system is still covered under warrenty.

And its 2 years old btw, with 2 year old top of the line components

I hope i can access my dads files. He already thinks its my fault it stopped working. He's Like "What did you download this time" -and i never installed anything that harms a PC. I never get viruses, etc. I'm not a retard from skool who downloads thousnads of mp3s that are 4 kb....lol

So, thanks for the help. As long as i can retrieve the files in Slax and put 'em on my Flash Drive, i will be happy.

You'll need a Linux distro that can read NTFS, not all of them can. I think I tried Backtrack 2 and it read them.

Slax is reading the drive, but where can i go to access his "My Documents" Folder?

And his Desktop folder.

Basicly, where are other ways to access other peoples deskops and My Documents? Thanks

Typically it's C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents or C:\Profiles\[username]\My Documents . Copy both the My Documents and Desktop folders.
