DS redesign WIP

this is looking pretty nice for a ds mod, hmm, this does give me an idea, but I'll have to think of how I want everything to be. So keep up the good work, but maybe for revision two, I could hook you up with a ds lite

Do modchips work on DS lites? Are there special ones for them? or is the lite's circutry the same as the DS Phat.

I might be starting this project again with a new case..

I cut the top screen section and bottom screen section and they caused me problems..

1. Motherboard doesn't sit right in the case anymore.
2. The top screen ribbon cable wont reach as far as I'd like it to reach, which is now causing me problems.
3. There doesn't seem to be any benefits to relocating the battery, since it's nearly the same thickness all round anyway.. But this can be reduced if I remove the headphone port, which I don't want to do, so I could leave it be in the redesign 2.

I'll come up with another concept.

I abandonned the idea of abandonning this case, and decided to take an alternative route...

I got some Fibreglass mat, and built a back case for that.. I masked off the motherboard and everything inside, fitted everything, including my partial back piece, and went at it.

Let me say right here, this is my first time using fibreglass, and the stuff copulate sucks!

I got it all over my hands and now it wont come off, and I hate this crap.

I now stink, and the house stinks because the smell trailed me in here, and all I have is a yellow goop on the back of my DS with little white strands of albino rhino pubes sticking out...


It doesn't look like much, but I'll be sanding it down and using P38 on it too...

After prising it off the work surface, I took a picture of the front.

The extra P38 is there because of a warp I had in the back piece which caused the front to crack slightly.. So those will fill in those gaps.


The culprit. To be fair, you get a lot of mixture and a lot of fibre glass mat for £6.50, which is good for large projects with excessive use of this stuff. Using P40 would have been nicer since it's half pre-combined, but you only get about a quarter of the fibreglass.

Go pick up a heat gun and some thin acylic. You could easily make your fisrt design.

I've got both..
I opted for this method so I could get the shape relatively close to the motherboard without damaging it. Using a heat gun would damage it.

I ripped off the fibreglass so I can start sanding it and shaping it.

The masking tape seems to be perminently attached to it now, but I'll try get as much off as possible.

Tomorrow I might not do any work, so don't expect any updates.

Some problems..

I've got the case within an inch of being finished.


1. Cracks where I put the case together are now showing, so I need to find a better way of securing the case together.. I'll look around for some resin or something, otherwise I'll have a crap finish.

2. The back panel isn't straight.. In fact, it doesn't even resemble straight unless you have crooked eyes.

3. Difficulty mounting the buttons on the back because of the slim height.

4. Difficulty mounting top screen controller because of the distance.


So this has left me with 3 options.

1. Continue and do the best I can.

2. Start a new case, which I've already attempted, and already made several copulate ups.

3. Abandonment of this project.


Considering the progress I've made so far, I'd rather carry on!

I did that, but then did 1 again after, and I think this project is salvagable.

Irony..

The back of the DS is heavier than a normal DS.


I'm going to call this the Nintendo DS fatter!

Although it is thinner than the normal DS, and the approximate width and height of of the DS when opened, it's definitely heavier.

Just got a major update...


I've spent the past few weeks sanding and filling and sanding and filling, and I was nearly ready... I couldn't fix the crack by the screen hole, and it was pissing me off.. After fitting the parts, I couldn't get the screen to fit with the screen controller and this caused me to rethink everything..

I decided to rip the top half of the DS off, since I had completely copulate it up, and redo it with a new top half of a DS.

Anyway, before I go on to that, let's back track a bit...

The last time I updated, I posted that I decided to fibreglass the back of the case.. This sucked! So I decided to use DVD case plastic, and then shape it. This worked a treat, but DVD box was too flimsy, so I had to reinforce it a bit.


After a lot of filling, a lot of sanding, a lot of filling, and a lot more sanding, I got this... It's a bit wonky, because something copulate up earlier on in the progress, but it's still OK.


The front after I mounted and sanded the new top on.. I fibreglassed a bit more on the edges to get it to the right size. I also fused the plastic together with a soldering iron so it doesn't crack.


After a lot more sanding, I started priming... No, it's not blue.. Because of how crap the lighting is in this room, I took this shot on the window ledge, and it looks blue for some reason. Sorry for the poor quality.

Also, you might see some little dips in the surface, those are just splashes from black gloss as part of another project I'm doing.



The back has also been sanded and painted, and it looks beautiful.. A few pot holes, but I'm out of p38, so I either spend more money and get some spot putty or something and fill in the little gaps, or leave it.. I'd like to fill it in, but we'll see..


A comparison shot compared to the normal DS (my girlfriends DS.. I don't decal my stuff...) It's actually smaller height wise, and the normal DS isn't even opened flat.


Proof that it is smaller than a regular DS for those who said it's in fact bigger... Even with the screen closed, it's still smaller than a regular DS, which is what I wanted to achieve.. Thank god I achieved it.
