vskid wrote:@EnterTheHatrix- How were you doing this at first? It sounded like you were trying to just copy the files. :?
No,

First time, I installed on another PC and put the hard drive in.

Second time, I started install and selected copy files to hard drive and put it in the laptop, but didn't boot.

Third time, I tried via CD and then swapped to laptop, didn't work because there was no CD.

Fourth time, tried Ubuntu instead.

Fifth time, installed XP on PC, started PC side installer, copied to hard drive, and formatted the partition which contained the files, (including ubuntu) which gave me a grub read error.

Sixth time, I reinstalled Windows PC side, no ubuntu, didn't format.

Seventh time, Set up 2 partitions, 1 with Windows XP on PC, second to have XP for laptop installed... This worked.

dshacker wrote:sounds sort of like it, in my case, a laptop sometimes also has to have a screen that's wired into the board so the board checks for it. If anything goes wrong, just format the HDD on another computer, or just set up a small drive in and connect ethernet to a computer and to the laptop, and work your way from there. At the most, I've never had a problem installing xp, but I dont use that anymore since one, I'm on a mac now, and two, my dell 4550 uses vista, so Im all good, but one of my concerns is why only macs can boot both a windows and mac os. I mean, isnt it possible to run mac os on a microsoft computer. Cause if it is, then by all means Ill do it. Tonight, I'll see if I can format my dell to osx tiger. If i works out, then Ill post it.
I think you're missing the point of my difficulties.. This is a laptop. 1 hard drive can be hooked up. No CD drive, no floppy drive, no screen. I needed to install XP on the laptop without the CD.

D
I don't need to do that. motherboard doesn't lock a hard drive serial to it or anything.
