Make a 7808 out of a 7805, 7808's are less common than 7805's.
How much power will they need to output? Some can't output as much as others. I think I might have a couple, maybe even the resistors if you need them, I just don't know how much current they can output since they would be from organ donors.

I really have to recommend the Dimension Engineering regulators. They are switching (buck) style, so they are super efficient and produce hardly any heat. You dont need a heat sink, and you will generally get much better battery life than your standard 7805/7808.

I just got this yesterday. Its got super fine adjustment.
They also make a 5v one, which I use for all my projects: http://www.dimensionengineering.com/DE-SW0XX.htm
At $16 shipped its more expensive than a linear reg, but the battery life and lack of heat sink is well worth it for me.
