I don't know if you guys have seen this yet, but I saw this over at Engaget where a guy built his own wireless SNES and NES controllers to work with his Wii or Gamecube.

What I'm trying to do is to find two parts that he has listed on his site. I live in the US, and the site he references is in AU. They will not ship the RX/TX components to the US, probably because of FCC regulations or something. Here are his links to the AU site:
Transmitter
Receiver
Everything else seems to be pretty easy to find for me. Does anyone know of any sites in the US that may carry these, or have any suggestions on what else to try. I've thought of hacking a Wavebird, or even an old radio controlled car. Hey, that might work.
I'm trying to find a place that sells RX/TX parts in the US

I thought about that too, but I would imagine that the wavebird wouldn't fit inside of the snes controller on top of the problem of mapping the buttons to the pcb. Programming the PIC's actually seems interesting to me. That might be something valuable for me to learn for future projects as well. There would be no telling what I could build if I learned how to program those things.
As for using a radio controlled car, I wonder if the TX/RX units work in a similar way as those that he used. It might be very hard to remove the units from the PCBs though. I guess I could stop by a hobby shop that sells real RC cars and see if they have any suggestions.

Wireless chips
Hi,
I'm the guy that did the wireless mod, and as one of the other replies points out you can get them on the SparkFun site. Make sure you get the ones rated at 4800bps though, they also sell some cheaper versions that only do 2400bps (the transmitters send at 4000bps).
Good luck!

Sweet man! Awesome job on those controllers! They look great, and I love the look of the SNES with the power plug in place of the original cable!
I swear that I looked all over Spark Fun and I couldn't find those things. I think it was because at the time I was looking for exact model numbers. It wasn't until recently that I've decided to start a more broader search. Thanks for the idea, I'm looking forward to trying this!
Nice! That is a transmitter/receiver pair for only $15 US! I can handle that. I take it that I could possibly run two controllers at the same time if I made one with the 315Mhz and another set with the 434Mhz!
