Birthday present creations?

Whenever my friends' birthdays roll around, they're expecting a gift card or some cash, but that's no fun. The best thing to do is make something using your own thought, something they'll like.

Take my friend, Chris, for example. Last year, he was into Kingdom Hearts. Looking around the net, I saw a few examples of home-built keyblades, which looked very interesting. I set off to build my own, seeing as you could buy one for the cheap price of $250 on eBay. Outcome: http://www.skytroniks.com/images/database/keyblade/

Anyways, he loved it, and all my other friends were jealous and shameful as Chris adored the present.

Great feeling!

Has anyone here taken their craftsman spirit or electrical engineering skills to a present of any sort? I've heard of a few cases where someone gave a portable as a present, but why don't you tell the story here?

Does your mom say that it looks great, like she would to a special child that drew something crappy?

I do the same thing gamemasterAS does, and I also burn CDs and give them as gifts.

I love making gifts more personal for my friends. I've built about 3 portables for gifts specifically for my friends or relatives, and I also give out modded consoles (one of my friends is CRAZY on overclocked StarFox for the SNES

).

The one that would have to be coolest, though, was my GBC Pokemon mod. My friend is still to this day obsessed with the old pokemon games, so I grabbed a GBC from Gamestop. My other friend is a crazy-good artist, so he painted Pokemon stuff on the case, and I overclocked it, installed some cool LEDs, and added a built-in charger. We even got him a Japanese cart of Pokemon green to boot! It was pretty damn cool.

I've done a few of these, I've given my mom and grandma a digital picture frame, and I whipped up an external screen for my sister's iPod video when she went on a trip.

I've always done the bracelet thing for friends of mine that are girls when I was younger. I now try to do my best, like my friend Mark likes NES so I fixed his for his birthday (i.e. cart slot, lockout switch bypass). He loved it, but then his brother got a top loader. Ah, irony.

'ey, my Firefox spellcheck doesn't check one-line boxes. >_<

I used to burn CDs back in the Napster days, but since then they mean no value to my friends.
