Apple eMate or Atari Portfolio

I am sure you have all asked yourself this question. Well at least some of you that know of handheld computers of the 90's. So which one is better? I need to buy one or the other. I dont really want a Jordna though because the keyboard looks a little to squished together. I like these ones better also because I like that old school feeling in it. Well the eMate is only 10 years old. Well at least I think it is. And if there are any other old school handheld computers. Thanks for the help!

You'd probably have an easier time with the eMate. (The Portfolio runs DOS, but its screen only supports 40 x 8 characters and it only has 128k of RAM.)

Unless you really <i>need</i> it to be digital, I suggest you get a Day Runenr planner. I have a cheap $10 one with an added 1/2" three-ring binder insert (made form a dollar store binder), and it suits my needs just fine. It fits a full size pad, a 100 page notebook, and a bunch of papers, pens, and Post-It flags. And it still zips closed comfortably.

I have read the e-mate's NewtonOS is quite sluggish out of the box, this can sort of be fixed with a non-official RAM upgrade (not easy to DIY if I remember).

The Portfolio looks nice and would be my pick out of the two, it takes AAA's, but is rather pricey on ebay, and I don't think it's backlit.

What do you intend to do with these any way? ("collect" is a perfectly acceptable answer, trust me

, just either might not be the most practical system for every day use)

It wouldnt? Well the Atari isnt too practical since the screen isnt too big. But I could see using the eMate everyday. I usually have a lot of things to write up at school, but i dont have a portable computer. Its got a lot of homebrew also. And the wireless internet you can add to it. It takes a little modding for it though....

Well I consider the emate a little large for every day use but it's not really that big, and they are fairly cheap.

you would be better off with a jornada, they are more powerful, color screen and from what ive seen the keyboard wouldnt be all that bad to type on, its maybe 20% smaller than a regular laptop keyboard

Get a HP 100LX, it's old, runs almost any DOS app with textmode and CGA graphics. I would stay away from the Portfolio because their screens are small, break easily, and the HP is smaller than it.

The price doesnt matter too much. I just want a portable computer that can have homebrew and such and have a word proccessor. I also want internet capability. Theres a website for making the eMate wireless to the internet. But if there are old school pocket PC's capable of going on the internet without too much modding then post it here! I am wanting that old school feeling so suggest older models of pocket computers.

bicostp: I am not too sure about that day runner. I am faster at typing then writing so thats why I am going for the computer type. Thanks anyway though!

I always here good things about the Poqet PC in magazines and online. I also hear praise for the Psion 5 series of palmtop PDA's a lot.
